| They Might Be Giants – Dead Lyrics

This is another great TMBG song of sadness hidden inside lunatic lyrics and great melodies. The song is weighted with the regret of someone who wasted their life ("it's over... and I haven't done anything that I want") or is currently wasting their life. Doesn't matter which because they are essentially the same. Sure, now he resolves to not sit at home anymore and finally stop hanging around, but it's too late. I could even say that "taken off the shelf before the date stamped on myself" eludes to him expiring (dying) before he was ready (date on self); but I never read that far into it. So stop wasting your life blogging or downloading music and DO STUFF. |

Wow, more reviews than all the biggest TMBG hits. Canteendave, you are a superstar. I have to stop reading all this about John and John on drugs. Though their music is crazy and barely rational, I always thought it was just "stupid lyrics under great melodies." Dr. Worm strikes me as another example of that. One of my favorite TMBG songs, and boy do I like alot of them. |

| They Might Be Giants – No One Knows My Plan Lyrics

Surprisingly, this is one of the ONLY songs in the TMBG discography that makes any sense to me. It seems like a portrayal of someone who's carefully planning something from within the cold solitude of his own silence. For whatever twisted reason, he "must be silent", yet he longs to voice his plan. He similarly longs to be normal and enjoy the "dancing, shouting" and "the lovely music" (though his warped mind hears them as "shrieks of pain"), yet he's contained within the "iron bars" of his own sad mind. |

| They Might Be Giants – Thunderbird Lyrics

Out of curiousity, I gave a second try to playing backward "On Earth My Nina" from TMBG's internet-only album Long Tall Weekend. Because it's clearly an odd song. Years ago when I first tried, I couldn't understand it played backward. But just now, it is clear that it's some of the lyrics from Thunderbird. It's done in the classic Twin Peaks style of playing the lyrics backward and figuring out English words that seem to match. Then, singing those. When you reverse, you get something similar to the original! Creepy and interesting. Lyrics sitting on the shelf since 1999 before finally being released in 2004. |
