Rilo Kiley – The Good That Won't Come Out Lyrics 21 years ago
just to add to you, dancinthemoonlight, it's also about being afraid to admit things to yourself, especially in the context of relationships. She's hurting herself by turning away from the fact that this guy keeps mistreating her, over and over again.

In other words, yes it is about keeping your mouth shut in the face of problems, but only because you're scared of the consequences, which of course, is ironic, since the consequence of saying nothing at all is silent suffering.

Sufjan Stevens – Flint (For the Unemployed and Underpaid) Lyrics 21 years ago
The full title is "Flint (For the Unemployed and Underpaid)." The song evokes a feeling of isolation and melancholy through both the lyrics and the simplicity of the music. Most certainly not the most uplifting of openers, but definitely a very powerful one.

Rilo Kiley – Small Figures in a Vast Expanse Lyrics 21 years ago
I think the phrase "old habits die hard" embodies this song. In some relationships, it's impossible to get out of the vicious cycle. He knows her so well and so despite trying to start anew, he always winds up coming back to her because it is what he knows best.

And despite all the unresolved conflicts, every time they pretend that they really are starting anew and that they don't know that they'll inevitably end up hurting each other again.

Rilo Kiley – Science vs. Romance Lyrics 21 years ago
i think this song is about the fact that love isn't something concrete like science (hence the title). when it comes to romance, you can't just "see straight ahead" or be a "robot inside a grid." As AccidentProne stated, it's about following your gut, not analyzing things scientifically.

Death Cab for Cutie – Coney Island Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is one of my favorite Death Cab songs. I think that it's just about someone who is revisiting a place from his childhood memory, but of course one's memory of a place is much different than the way you see it when you return. The idea that "everyone will go except me" shows that because he can stay in his memory as long as he likes. And he "could not help from smiling" because remembering and seeing things from a different/more experienced perspective, being the outsider looking in, enables him to put a memory into the context of reality.

Death Cab for Cutie – Tiny Vessels Lyrics 21 years ago
There's something about this song that makes you feel sympathy toward the singer for some reason, due in part to the line, "I wanted to believe in all the words that I was saying as we move together in the dark." I feel that you actually can feel the guilt in his words as he describes every detail very vividly. The words combined with the music don't make the singer appear as the antagonist, but simply as someone who wants to love the girl in the song as much as she does, but he can't fool her or himself.

I also love the transition into Transatlanticism that many others have mentioned. I think that the contrast between the different tones of the two songs makes Transatlanticism seem that much stronger.
