Tool – Aenema Lyrics 20 years ago
"I, however, do not agree with the philosophy of "finding your inner selves" because it follows the "truth is outward" maxim, except it has been inverted."

Correction: not "truth is outward" but "truth is out there"

Tool – Aenema Lyrics 20 years ago
"I just gotta say, by lookin past the surface of this song, or at least by tryin too, I get a lot more out of it. It goes past bein angry at how fake and superficial people and LA are. The word AEenma is a mixture of the word Enema, which is clearing of the bowels with fluid, and the word Anima, which is, in Jungian theory, the true inner subconscious self. It seems to me that this song is about clearing away those attachments to stupid useless shit that we don't need, and getting back to nature. He makes multiple references to mom, which is probably Mother Nature. Its about getting back to our true inner selves, uncovering what's hidden in our subconcious, and clearing away all of the shit, and learning how to swim. LEARN TO SWIM,"

Summed up very well. I consider it to be the correct interpretation of the song. I, however, do not agree with the philosophy of "finding your inner selves" because it follows the "truth is outward" maxim, except it has been inverted. The problem I have with this philosophy is that it presupposes a whole slew of things that I do not agree with for find plausible (namely, the notion that every person has a "true self"). The reason I do not believe this is because I believe if a person wants to know themselves they have to do so by taking a genealogical approach,i.e. taking the historicity of their 'self' into consideration. This is essential to understand who you are and what forces have shaped you as a person. When I say "forces" I mean environmental forces which I use in a very loose sense for they entail a diverse array of forces that wholistically form an incredibly dynamic environmental force. In other words, a framework with numerous variables contained within it. What are these variables? Societal forces, psychological, genetical, etc... What is important is to remember that these are all inextricably intertwined.

So following this train of thought, how can there actually be a "true self"? There is not such thing (in my opinion). It's pure mythology. There is only the biological self, what you have experienced and how you have (and are going to) interpret those experiences. What I am really trying to get at is, you are whoever the fuck you want to be.The forces which have shaped you as a person are there within yourself. The task, I believe, now is to identify those "forces that have shaped you", proceed to trace their historical path as best as possible (obviously, memories aren't perfect) and then recognize them (for what they are, whatever they may be). This process, however, must not be mistaken with the "true self buried within" notion. throughout

So you are who you are right now, but that does not mean that you will be this person 20 years from now.

The reason for this long post is an attempt to spark discussion amongst, what seems to me, an intelligent community of Tool fans. I believe in people educating each other. It's healthy, it's fun, it's democratic.

Against All Authority – Bakunin Lyrics 20 years ago
The statement I made above should be taken as fact because I am sure if it is true or not. It probably is not true. In my readings on Marx or Bakunin I have never come across any such event ever occurring. Marx, however, was quite keen on dueling. I recommend a book called "Karl Marx: A Life" by Francis Wheen if anyone is interested in the life lived by the man.

As I have read through these comments I have come across a similarity that several of them share; namely, that this song has a "deeper meaning". I'm sorry, I just don't see any hint of a "deeper meaning"; usually songs with hidden message have clues in them that have been left by the songwriter. There's no hint of it; its a pretty straight forward song: the guy hates the world, especially LA.

If someone could explain to me, in detail, the "deeper meaning" that this "genius" is trying to get at then I'd be delighted.

Bad Religion – Cease Lyrics 20 years ago
I feel like the previous interpretations concerning the the first verse is correct. The interpretations that were given for the second and third verses were, I feel, too vague. Of course, when it comes to lyrical interpretation one can only speculate.

The second verse I feel is referring to the United States Government. "The institution on the Hill" is Capitol Hill which is supposed to be the mecca of democracy; a beacon of freedom that burns in the "New World." Of course, it is not. What the "shadowed stain" is, I don't know, but whatever it is he is referring to is being used to "enshroud the fraud"; the corruption or crimes that are occurring in high places. The "descendents"[us] find it "oh so odd" when the same old tale of the abuse of power is uncovered. What I think Greg is trying to say here is that the "institution on the Hill" has been corrupt and fraudulent since its conception and a rich history of its fraudulence has been known all this time. Despite this, the "descendents" still seemed surprised when news breaks that the government is involved in somthing that the public decrees as foul. Example: The current war in Iraq. I dont think it would have occurred if the general populace understood the workings of the American government concerning foreign policy. Yet everybody fell for the "Saddam's gonna blow us all to hell if we dont go in there and kill him first" line. The freest population in human history is also the stupidest (generally speaking). One has the freedom to be stupid and ignorant. "What pretension!"

Third verse:

"grave memorial hewn white stone like the comforting caress of a mother or a friend you've always known"

Here Greg is being sarcastic, I feel.
What is so "comforting" about a statue or a memorial? They're made out of "hewn white stone", not something warm like a "caress of a mother." Yet this is one manner in which we remember/record our history: the erecting of statues/memorials, but since they are made from stone they are cold and we cannot relate to them in a warm and humanistic manner. For example, the Vietnam memorial in D.C. It's just a wall with a bunch of names on it. How are we supposed to feel the "pain and significance" of those remembered on this wall that actually experienced it? If we truly felt the "pain and significance" then maybe the invasion of Iraq would not have occurred. Of course we cannot feel this through "grave memorials" or "hewn white stone" so instead our history gets "reduced to remembrance" and the "generations pass without recompense". We lose the clear and holistic understanding of our history. We pass without being afforded the lessons that could be learned from days past. "What pretension!"

Overall, I think Greg is trying to paint of portrait of absurdity in this song. How do we prohibit the absurdity from "spreading randomly"? The answer is in the title.

Against All Authority – Bakunin Lyrics 20 years ago
An interesting fact: Bakunin challenged Marx to a pistol duel(when the two contenders stand back to back then take, say, ten paces then turn around and blow each other's head off), but Marx declined. Instead, Marx sent one of his apprentices or associates(dont quite remember the details) to duel Bakunin. Bakunin ended up killing the apprentice/associate. Hilarious!

Against Me! – Baby, I'm an Anarchist! Lyrics 20 years ago
negatyve's correction is correct. There was a lot of confusion over which side threw or detonated this makeshift bomb. Given this murky situation the police took advantage of it and blamed it on the anarchists, knowing that the courts would go along with it. This is due too a long tradition of nation-states targeting anarchists, and other subversive political ideologies such as Marxists. A great historical example would be, just to illustrate the ficiousness of this tradition, what kind punishments radicals received during the 1919-20 Red Scare. Communists would be hunted down and jailed. Anarchists were just murdered. Check out the Sacco and Vanzetti case.

Yes, yes, this is a traditional pro-IRA song. Thats precisely why its says Dave King wrote the lyrics to this song in the booklet that comes with the CD. I guess he must an agent of the IRA embedded here in the States to spread pro-IRA propaganda , and Flogging Molly the medium with which to spread it. Mmm, I feel like I've reached a higher level of thinking here guys!

yes inshadows, I too am surprised that no one has commented on this one. This is one of my favourite FM songs. King's quite the poet, not just any poet but a romantic one. This song clearly shows that along with Whistles the Wind on Within a Mile of Home.

Flogging Molly – Seven Deadly Sins Lyrics 21 years ago
"What became of rebels who sang for you and me?,
Grapplin with their demons in the search for liberty."

This is the essence of the song, in my opinion, for it complements the references to Joe Strummer, but more importantly it asks us what happened to our rebels? The ones who, in their pursuit for liberty, had many of their own demons to deal with. A person such as Johnny Cash also.

This song is also about the seven members. I dont which member is supposed to represent which sin, I couldn't tell you that. I do think though that what they might be implictly saying is, and this goes back to what I said earlier, that they are the rebels for this generation. Rebels who will "sing for you and me."

Flogging Molly – Screaming At The Wailing Wall Lyrics 21 years ago
Also, be must be said that the Wailing Wall is a wall that stands in Jerusalem and has, traditionally been a place of mourning and grieving, for Jews. So my guess is that the reason why "we're still screaming at the Wailing Wall" is because there still is and always will be great human tragedy to mourn and grieve over.

I'll be blunt. I'm not here to make a point. I'm here to rant and rave and throw around all kinds of "verbal diarrhea." Also, to pick on people who dont really know what they are talking about(you know who you are). Why? Cuz I'm an asshole. I've gotten my kicks for now. Cheerio.

"...he didn't declare himself one until 1963 in order to elicit aid from the USSR, because the US had already become hostile towards cuba."

Actually Castro declared Cuba a communist state in 1960, I dont know about himself, in order to get aid from USSR, as you stated. Generally, Anarchism is considered leftist but I think that is inaccurate since it is an ideology where the absence of the state is the very core of the philosophy. All the other political ideologies fall under statism, I believe, since a presuppostion in all those philosophies is the necessity of a state. Anarchism is in a totally seperate realm, in my opinion.

And IAmTheEvenStar, the information that goro13 was "blindly re-stating" had been out there for decades. Moore merely brought it to the nation's attention.

rhcprox, I remember when I was your age, just passionately rambling some nonsensical jargon about things I knew very little about. Those were the days, when the world was cut and dry, but you have to learn that that isn't the case. Put a little knowledge in your head. First step, turn off your television and pick up a book.

"...in times of doubt ALWAYS go against the side of the enemy and support your country. That is all I have to say..."

Spoken like a true fascist.

"...but he's our president and we should support him."

Attitudes like that are characteristic of a totalitarian culture, I hope you realize that. How's that a "respectable opinion"?

As for the guy whose daddy was in the marines, HA, I laughed when I read that. So your dad knows the whole truth about what happened in Nicaragua because of was in the marines? You've got to be kidding me. If he was military intelligence maybe then I'd listen to what you'd have to say. If one wants to understand any situation, one must look at the greater forces at work such as planning that went into it. Always look at the higher ups are planning and why they are planning, thats the most important part. And my "higher ups" I mean the intelligence work that pertain to situation, whatever it may be. For example, if you want to understand the current fiasco in Iraq, you dont ask a grunt. He's just an ant in a very large and intricate anthill. You look at the behaviour, thinking, and planning of the queen. That being the leaders in the White House, The Department of "Defense", Army Intelligence, CIA, and so on and so forth.

Green Day – Holiday Lyrics 21 years ago
Anti-American? Whats that even supposed to mean? Can anyone clarify that? That, to me, seems like a vacuous statement based on any equally empty concept. Another vacuous phrase you hear a lot is "support the troops" or "i support our troops". What does that mean? How do you support them? If it's just symbolic, then its utterly useless. Its about as useless as "I hug trees" or "unite for peace". What does that do?

The reason rhcprox, and others, cant respond with strong arguments is because they dont know what are talking about. Their account of modern American history, pertaining strictly to American Foreign Policy over last, say 20 years, is, based on what they have said so far, just so nonsensical that to hold it up to scrutiny would a complete waste of time. Once again, they didn't "do their homework."

Saddam Hussein is a communist? Any idiot can tell you thats false.

"...and despite what politically ignorant people may tell you", "....hardly anybody knows what they are talking about..."

rhcprox, you've made my day. Politically ignorant who dont know what they are talking about. You're right, there are many politically ignorant people out there who say a lot of dumb shit. So there's a truism, I'm sure we can all agree on that one. A truism that can apply to you very well based on some of the things you've posted so far. Agusnor's recount of what the events that took place in Nicauragua are accurate, and there are plenty of other examples to add to that.

PS: Two more "American Idiots" that this truism can apply to: hedgemon and coldfrontcory. They didn't "do their homework."
