i don't think there is much interesting about these lyrics (and the same for all the other teen angst ridden NIN lyrics) .. reminds me of things the kids wrote on thier folders in high school.. the lyrics are interesting only in the context of Cash's life ..but Cash's most poppy songs hold that same desperate sentiment for me with a bit more subtleness (which i think is more talent to pull that off) |

i always thought "please stay with your own kind and I'll stay with mine" meant something more like the one's with more of morrisseys philosophies of sex ..not anything about homosexuality |

this is one of thier best songs and easily thier best record..i'm embarressed to own it now after all the crap that came later..custon concern is a great sond and pink floyd said all this in "the wall" already...but anyhow this is one of thier earlier pieces (when Isaac had to work)..and i always thought about this song in the way i felt when i had to get up and go walk to work on those sunny mornings of the summer .thinking goddamn it I'm goddamn it i'm gonna have to do this pointless shit forever...i never felt it was a big political statement ..i felt is was a pretty personal piece speaking of his discontent with his place in our exsisting civilization ..i feel it is very much a complaint in the vain of the trancendentalists (i.e. Ralph Waldo Emerson)..and here I am at work typing this years later and still finding this song as depressing as ever..god help us all

i relate too well with these feelings. this is a great joy division song that took me a while to give a chance because i heard it too often. but it is engraved on his gravestone and it is about his wife deborah curtis. in which he had a hard time being faithful and really just had a hard time dealing with life and sort of a chaotic mental exsistance. very poetic ..and I believe it to be another suicide note |

hello everyone. i just watched the wall for like the 5th time in my life last night. i believe this song is about something a little different and more relavant then just drug abuse.at least in the context of the film.i think it has to do alot with the liberation we feel as children that slowly disappears as we become adults. "when I was a child i caught a fleeting glimpse out of the corner of my eye.. i turned to look but it was gone.. i cannot put my finger on it now....." i think this whole scenario was that he ,for a moment as a child, saw his dream ...but could not hold on to it "the child is grown,the dream is gone" that innocence,that liberation, that real,genuine pursuit has disappeared as he has become mentally numb by living restictive lifestyles that have been fully designed for him and the rest of us in society.and having no higher reasons to exsist."now i've got this feeling once again i cant explain you would not understand ..this is not who i am ..i have become comfortably numb"i think he had this moment of clarity ..this feeling that brought him back to a child state feeling liberated and seeing a life full of dreams..a really profound and insightful moment that he could not explain but only experience..and then he apoligizes and says he is not really what he had become (this emotionless,maybe even bitter person living life like a he was already dead). Since the entire film is about world and personal oppression i can't help but to feel this is a somewhat accurate and maybe a little more romantic interprutation then to say that this piece is about a heroin trip alone. jameseckrippie@hotmail.com |
