Bright Eyes – Well Whiskey Lyrics 21 years ago
It's a lament of a relationship he used to have, where everything was great, and she helped him through tough times("You used to push back the darkness like a floodlight") But she left, and now he feels deserted and wants that relationship back, but all he has is his drinking to numb the pain(Saying he doesn't mind to spend more on whiskey these days, because he needs it more) He tries to ignore the problem, but realizes unless he confronts her about it he'll always be depressed and he just wants to be near her, and have her love, but not in a sexual way(he even says he'll sleep on the floor). yet according to her preditctions in the lyrics("You see the future and I agree. We've agreed, tonight's not happening.") that he can't have her back in his current state

Then he tries to stop drinking for either her sake, or for the sake of his own depression, but then realizes he can still drink and have a good time without her("With no anesthetic you're found to be sore. But tonight I'll be drinking all peaceful and warm")

So then he gets out of his rut and makes one more attempt to mend the bridges between him and the girl. Saying that nobody knows what the future holds - thus canceling out her earlier prediction that they can't get back together. It's a very hopeful song, and he changes from his depressed state initially into a cheerful one at the end.

Sorry that was long, but just for the fact there were no comments I felt obligated to do this song justice. And I'll hope you note the lyrics I mentioned are a little different than the ones posted above, but I copied mine straight out of the CD book. So the ones above may need amended.

Bright Eyes – True Blue Lyrics 21 years ago
Oe of the more positive songs ever written by Conor. I just kept help but smile when I hear it. I think any other song writer would have a hard time getting away with using the word "blue" so much, and rhyming his lyrics like this. But with Conor it's such a change, and his great writing ability shines through it all. I don't think there's any overbearing meaning, just that it's ok no matter who you are as long as you're true to yourself.

Cursive – The Recluse Lyrics 21 years ago
Someone asked about the line to do with his ego and stomach.

He's saying that whatever he keeps telling himself, he'll act out and think is true in his mind, much like whatever he eats, comes out of him as well, and not in the most pleasant way in either case.

Cursive – The Game of Who Needs Who the Worst Lyrics 21 years ago
The calm start where he lovingly beckons her closer into the huge build when he screams

"To make you so goddamn defiant
So fucking triumphant"

Is just fucking perfect. Kasher just comes out and screams with all he has, and gets the message across perfectly - to whoever he's trying to convey it to. And it's a situation I think more or less anyone can relate to, or at least lines we've always wanted to say to someone who fucked around or stabbed us in the back. Just the range of emotions in this song is great, as with any Cursive song.

Kasher deserves way more credit than he gets, because he's a fucking genius. Enough said.

VAST – The Niles Edge Lyrics 21 years ago
The song has sort of a biblical reference about it.

The Prophet Moses was placed in a basket on the river of the Nile by his parents when the Egyptians decided to kill every Jewish male child, because they feared an uprising of the Jewish slaves. Because his parents obviously didn't want him to suffer that fate, they placed him in a basket and drifted him down the river, in hopes he would be spared, he was found and eventually taken in by the Pharoah's wife or daughter, which one escapes me now.

The "Wandering eyes commitments never can last" line alludes to his father perhaps leaving him and his mother for another woman. And to Jon it feels so cold to know his fathers name, because he'll never know him. And probably never will

It's asking his father if he feels regret or sorrow for what he did in abandnoning him. Much like Moses parents as they watched him float down the river in a basket

Beautiful song though, my favorite off of the album. The chanting on top of the amazing but simple guitar is almost haunting, and when Jon's voice comes in and displays such calm, and then wildly swings into anger and distrust I get chills.

Bright Eyes – Lua Lyrics 21 years ago
With the "eyes all painted black" lyric, I think that cancels out bulimia, and leans more toward a substance abuse problem. Which would explain not only the weight loss, but the dark circles under her eyes.

Bright Eyes – An Attempt to Tip the Scales Lyrics 21 years ago
I think when he says "They seemed so important at the time but now you can’t even recall any of the names, faces, or lines. It is more the feeling of it all."
It's sort of saying whoever he's singing about got so caught up in things that really don't matter all the people, how they looked, every little thing they said, and ignored the people that cared about them. And now they're trading liqour for blood(Drinking) in hopes that they can bring their relationship back together(tip the scales),

Bright Eyes – I've Been Eating (For You) Lyrics 21 years ago
High five doesn't refer to HIV. It's going along with the basketball theme where the girl in the song is just passed back and forth between guys, and then when they "score" they all go and give one another high fives and pats on the back.

Also I don't think Conor has an eating disorder, as much as he just can't stomach eating when he thinks about all of his problems(I know personally I've not felt like eating anything over personal problems) And when he was with her he didn't have any and felt good about himself, so he was eating, or rather as someone mentioned earlier, living for her. So when he says "don't ask about my appetite I didn't lose it tonight, it's been gone half my life" He's saying it's not just her that's fucked his life up, but she could have really helped him through his problems, yet they couldn't work things out, and now he's sunk back into his depression.

Also I think Lua is talking more about a drug problem, as we all know Conor's history with that.

Just my $.02
