| The Smashing Pumpkins – Drown Lyrics | 17 years ago |

The song was written after the release of Gish and before the Siamese Dreams session. It was released on the Singles Soundtrack. According to Wikipedia: "Debuted during the Gish tour and written not long after that record was released, the song, a heavy mixture of psychedelia and dream pop became a moderate radio hit in the summer of 1992 and gave the band significant exposure just before work commenced on Siamese Dream. "Drown" was to be released as a commercial single, but, as Billy Corgan explained, “ We wanted it to be a single, we were pushing for it. I was even willing to make it a video. Radio stations were playing it. And when it came time for the third single, they said, 'Screaming Trees.' And I was like, 'Screaming Trees??' But what label is Alice in Chains on and what label are the Screaming Trees on? Epic, which is the label that put out the soundtrack. And that's what killed the song.[1] " for me, you always hold a special place for your first. This was my first SP song. I used to leave my little ghetto blaster *heh* running at night with music playing low on repeat. I had some intense and really strange dreams...in particular with the final solo bit it had me dreaming about water, in particular a nearby river but in the river were whales and the solo was the whales speaking to me. I swear I wasn't ripped. The song has held different meanings for me over the years, but as I read the lyrics I think this might be about his relationship with his father. |

| The Smashing Pumpkins – Blank Page Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This person decides they aren't going to "go quiet into that good night" and is going to make it known how the feel. That they want the relationship to continue so they have deemed it necessary to go where they need to go, visit old familiar haunts. "looking for you at the five and dime" is probably not literal either. Billy does have a fondness for dated references.
Stop sign; Told me stay at home Told me you were not alone.
Its too late, they've moved on
Blank page; Was all the rage, Never meant to hurt anyone.. . In bed; I was half dead, Tired of dreaming of rest..

You havent changed You're still the same May you rise as you fall.
Seems to me these words were spoken. The biggest killer in any relationship is when one half of the whole is unable to progress and the other "outgrows" them. "May you rise as you fall" seems to me to be a passive aggressive way of telling someone that there is hope by the one who has outgrown the other that they will be better off for having gone through this. That they may excel through this conflict.
You were easy You are forgotten You are the ways of my mistakes
These word haunt me on a personal level. To me they are the most powerful and self-damning words BC has ever written. The words can be spoken either way, but the only term that comes to my mind is 'regret'. A pattern is indicated and has bee identified and yet, here is the pattern repeating itself again. "you are the ways of my mistakes".
I catch the rainfall, Through the leaking roof, That you had left.. Behind. You remind me, Of that leak in.. . My soul. The rain falls, My friends call, Leaking rain on the phone.
I can't say it better than anyone who has commented on these lines already.
Take a day. Plant some trees. May they shade you. From me. May your children. Play beneath.
This is the first time in the song there is an attempt at forgiveness. Cathartically hoping for the other to find happiness, even if it is not with them. "may they shade you from me", seems to me to be the authors own admission that their intensity was a central force in the disintegration of the relationship. The words could easily be taken flippantly, but I do not believe they are.
Blank page; Was all the rage, Never meant to say. Anything; In bed, I was half dead, Tired of dreaming of rest. Got dressed, Drove the state line. Looking for you at the five and dime.

But there I was.. . Picking pieces up. You are a ghost.. of my indecision. No more, little girl.
The author is alone, attempting to find some resolution and resolve from the end of the relationship. "you are a ghost of my indecision" seems to point out that the failure of the relationship in the authors mind is their fault. It came to a crossroads, some significant choice needed to be made. It is left quite open ended what that ultimatum was but the weakest decision one can make is no decision at all...and that seems to be the authors way explaining that the relationship has become a casualty of that inability to make a decision. "No more, little girl". The "girl" (which to me doesn't necessarily mean literally a female in this case) has grown up. It could mean literally that the "little girl" (and that can be a phrase of endearmant between adults so, as per most BC lyrics, don't take it literally) no longer exists to the author. |

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that his brother is (was for all I know) physically handicapped. He had immune defeciency issues and lived in a bubble type dome (Ala the surprisingly funny Bubble Boy) to keep him seperated from germs and bacteria. Now onto the lyrics...yeah, doesn't seem to fit that story at all. Since Sarcasm is one of Billy's best friends, wouldn't be surprised if the entire story is B.S. |

| Matthew Good – House Of Smoke & Mirrors Lyrics | 21 years ago |

Another retroactive glance by Matt Good, looking back at the institution that became MGB? Specifically who Matthew Good was in those times? "you can see right through me" You can definately sense that he was being pushed in a direction that was meant to market him as a caricature of himself. Almost a "Hey look, there goes Matt Good and he is pissed off about something" approach to demeaning his words and his thoughts through painting him as a radical left wing nutjob. Also a sense of self-reflection perhaps? Matthew is seeing Matt Good through the eyes of someone else. I think the 2nd verse is the current Matt Good speaking with the MGB version of himself, convincing himself to just let go. The 3rd verse is the realization that he hadn't been controlling where he was going...that he was asleep at the wheel and when he woke up, everything else around him was gone. All the reasons for him being there were gone. "Don't you think I don't know why? I've been asleep for years" |

| Sunny Day Real Estate – Faces In Disguise Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
I always thought the lyric was "faces in disguise, not a trace of design" It never made much sense to me because I always felt the song was very much about his spirituality, and if all that is around us was created, it would make sense for this song of discovery (which is how it always felt to me: a sense of awakening or rebirth or what-have-you). "go face the day, go and see new things" Very uplifting and beautiful song. |
