You're right, MrLongrove. I don't know where I remember reading that about East Berlin, but this is from the Visage website from the New Wave Complex:
"Midge Ure, Billy Currie (Ultravox) and Chris Payne (Gary Numan band) are credited with writing the song. Gary Numan shed some light on the matter for the Numan Digest. 'As far as I'm concerned Chris and Billy were the driving force behind writing 'Fade To Grey'. They used to work on it during the sound checks on my '79 tour. Cedric (Sharpley - Gary Numan band) was also heavily involved. In those days it was called 'Toot City'.'" |

Sorry about that...Realized I was being irresponsible in criticizing you...To each his own...I don't know, I can't detect tinniness in it, though...I guess I've listened to too much 80's lol... |

Sounds alot like the Madchester groups, especially in the delivery of the singer and the lyrics (very reminiscent of Shaun Ryder and the Mondays)...Very good, nonetheless |

I personally think it is an incredibly beautiful and saddening song...And actually alot better than most of the things out today (especially emo...at least Midge doesn't whine...) |

I believe that Steve, or one of the members of the group, were inspired by this looking at East Berlin or entering East Berlin, where the buildings seemed to "Fade to Grey"...otherwise, simply a brilliant song... |

I believe this was regarding the Anglo-ification of Scotland ("Anglofied vowels, sub-London thoughts"), especially with the statement that the character Alex takes up being the "new Scottish gentry"...awesome Adam and the Ants-esque drum-beat, also |
