Scott Walker – Duchess Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the line is
"With your shimmering dress,
It says no, it says yes,
It says I have nothing left for concealing"

I have no idea who its about, but damn its beautifully written & peformed

The Commodores – Nightshift Lyrics 16 years ago
Put to heartbreakingly beautiful use in Claire Denis' "35 Rhums". Go see it!

Tom Waits – On the Nickel Lyrics 16 years ago
This reminds me so much of the Wire - corner boys in season four - although the "nickel" probably does refer more to money begged for / found rather than "earned". But the feeling is just right.

Bob Dylan – Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands Lyrics 21 years ago
would anyone be so bold as to venture an opinion on the metaphors 'warehouse eyes' and 'arabian drums'? They're pretty obscure so I'm sure everyone understands them slightly differently....
I always thought of 'warehouse eyes' as sort of trying to contain what he sees, ie. sara (or whoever this song is addressed to) within himself. There's probably more to it than that though, and 'arabian drums' i just don't know.....anyone?

The Libertines – What A Waster Lyrics 21 years ago
oh, and another thing about this song (amused me when i first heard it), is that at one time the line "save me from tomorrow" was "save me from the taliban", in 'honour' of the former libertines drummer who one day decided he would 'go off to fight the taliban', never to be seen again

The Libertines – What A Waster Lyrics 21 years ago
it is £2 as libertines lover says, and its about a girl (a prostitute) who used to live with pete & carl a few years ago.
of course its easy to say 'oh the irony, pete's the waster' but this songs really more about an attitude to life, he may have (or have had) problems but its not quite the same

The Libertines – Up The Bracket Lyrics 21 years ago
ok ok,
up the bracket does mean to punch someone in the throat, its from the carry on films i believe.
to explain some more 'english references'.....
shadow men are police and yes those are the roads.
if you want to put a 'plot' to it, its basically pete (who wrote this song without carl i think) being followed around london by police officers looking for someone he knows, and he gives them 'the fingers'.
and pete no longer has seroius drug problems by the way.

Bright Eyes – Lua Lyrics 21 years ago
i think the lines
"you're looking skinny like a model....just keep going to the bathroom always say you'll be right back...well it takes one to know one kid i think you got it bad"
refers to bulimia, i.e. why she's skinny, keeps going to throw up.
