i cry everytime i listen to this song. absolutly a brillient song. the beginning catches you off guard...with the "and it came to me then" of course your like thinking "what what?" then the next line makes you think like hell..."wow..he's right" the next two lines "as i stared at my shoes in the ICU that reeked of piss and 409" give you a setting and you get to invision this place. the next lines "and i rationed my breaths as i said to myself that i'd already taken too much today" that is like saying..."i need to think of the people who dont get that breath...i dont need it...give it to them..." the next line...self explanitory. more imagry... then...saying...memories...wow...cherish this life while it lasts and just because loving=losing doesnt mean you shouldnt love at all...loving=living too. more amazing imagry... then the best lines (in my opinion): "then the nurse comes round and everyone lifts their head but i'm thinking of what sarah said, that love is watching someone die" after that line there is a piano solo...that just leaves you for a second. my life just like pauses and that thought...love is watching someone die...wow...i mean that is amazing how it makes me feel. .. my first impression was about the nurse. everyone in the waiting room has to wait, but the nurse has to watch...that was the person who shows love! and my second impression was the people in the waiting room bracing for the news...they are the ones who love...then i realized both is true for this song... it is hard to order my thoughts into words...i think this is an undescribibly amazing song...that leaves me with thought and wonder and tears... |

when i really looked at the lyrics it reminded me of a college student living in a dorm for the first time...or an apartment...or someone's attic... somewhere they have to pay rent. "what ghosts exist behind thses attic walls?" may mean like who has lived here before me?! what has happened here before me?! especially in a dorm. the other lines could involve the type of dicomfort one may feel in a new situation like this. i would say it is the first year of college because of the line "this is your first defense" and a four year collage because of the line "a four-year offense to the devoted type". there is something to do with the defense vs. offense aspect but i cant quite put it into words. then the student is thinking...oh man i thought after highschool all the drama was over...hense the line "i thought that this meant something more than broken hearts and new addictions". and there are open door parties that everone is invited to hense "i may have got an invitation but i wasn't invited." ...the open door = invitation, but not a real or personal one. i donno for sure if this is even close but it is my take on the song. i would like to hear more opinions. |

I think war is completely unnessisary and well, i just can't understand why america can't stop paying for shit we dont need and pay off our debt to the world THEN figure out alternative energy sources (try one that is non pollutive!!) so we stop fighting over oil (which is gonna kill us anyway). Then the world will be much better. i am not saying those two things will fix everything, but goddamn it would be a great improvement!! people need to start problem solving and not probem creating!! the song (and by the way the whole cd) is amazing!! i agree with ALMOST every word if this album. |

ok here is what the song means to me. i lived in central oregon my whole life so i am really familiar with it. well i moved two years ago to washington. when i go back to visit this is how i feel. i have gained so much strength and knowledge from this whole experience of moving. when i went back you know they introduced me to all these new people and always said, "oh yea this is alex who is visiting from washington." not only that but they also didnt have as much maturity as i do now and even if they did move i am sure they wouldnt gain as much from it as i did so, i wsas the the one worth leaving and i love this song cause it describes how i feel about that whole situation, the song itself can true ly mean anything to one particular person and what it means to the writer is a whole different story. when i write poetry i alway write what it means to me under the poem but they only read it after they have read the poem and made their own interpretations. all the ideas i have read here are great and some are very deep. great thinking! |

ok. i live in north bend which is east of seattle therefore a part of the "from the cascades to puget sound" thing. ben is around seattle alot. anyways. this makes alot of sense to me. title track may not know ben but she has a point. this valley...is surrounded by mountains. it feels like you are trapped. then you go out to seattle and there is the ocean and your like OMG trapped. but to me isnt that bad since i am not in a hurry to leave (it is beautiful here). yes i think he is saying he anxious to leave cause...well he is trapped and confined and he needs to break free. he says there are guards which represent the fact that he was too young to leave. then there is the whole part referencing the city and how fake everything is which would make him more anxious to leave. there are parties everynight and then they turn into nothing special. there are pretty strong drug references that can be taken in other ways too but drugs is the obvious. i think everyone has given the same insight i am just summing it all up. it can mean anything you wish and frankly he might have meant something else but how much does that matter? i like hearing these thoughts tho. not saying that anyone in particular is but you shouldnt lie about knowing ben. |

| oh man. last night i was talking to my brother who is back visiting his ex girlfriend(who he still loves) in oregon (where we use to live). they broke up because we moved otherwise they would have most likely been engaged by now. now she is living in a trashy apartment and is engaged to this horrible 20 year old loser with now job no money but lots of drug and sex. anyway my brother and i were talking on the internet last night while he was at her apartment and she and her bf were in the othher room having sex. i was crying because i felt so horrible that my brother (one of the nicest, most honest loving people i know) had to go through that. i was trying to help him help her, but he said he has tried everything. he is now so lost and scared but doing everything he can to save her. when i listened to this song and many other SoCo songs i realize why he is crazy about them. they are a great band. i think probably my favorite band! but i am just really sad for my brother...i guess everyone needs to be saved sometime. | |

YAY! well. i love modest mouse. lol! i like 20 mins away from issahquah, wa and so they are really a hit here which is cool cause they visit here ALOT! i am really happy cause i get to see them at deck the hall ball next week! anyways. to me this song could mean alot of different things. i think it is alot about mocking christianity but also about how we are wasting our time here and eventually we are gonna all be gone. it is about existence. i like the above interpretations on the video, though i cant decide which one i agree with more.
