| Dashboard Confessional – The Shade of Poison Trees Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| it is so appropriate that he titled this album 'the shade of poison trees'. christopher's roman catholicism is so evident in all of his cds and i find this parallel to the dripping religious ironies in the majority of bruce springsteen's albums as well as so many other rock and roll artists as well. the message behind this song is philosophical, but it goes so much deeper, deeper than us humans will ever have the capability to answer for ourselves: the shade of poison trees is a parallel to the tree of which eve and adam ate and committed the first eternal sin, hence the adjective 'poison' trees. when eve and adam ate from the tree in the garden of eden, they ate from the poison tree. this is another parallel in that the 'poison tree' is a sign of relief from the burdens of life and sin after death once one has accepted 'God' as the savior. the poison tree is also a religious parallel in that the cross which christ hung upon to 'save all of our sins' was the tree of life, the tree that 'gives us life once we accept christ as our savior'. what this question really is, as chris says, 'as we lie in the shade of poison trees are we as safe as we let ourselves believe?' as we rely on our faith in god to save us from everything we commit on a daily basis, are we as safe as we let ourselves believe we are in the shadow of christ? where he asks if there is (religious) truth in your pain he says 'you decide'. perfect. he's not going to answer any of this for us, it is a matter of the artists subjectivity. chris leaves us to ponder this and oh, we will. | |

| this song exhibits a question from a deep philosophical perspective. i question myself everyday with what he's asking in this song. there are no answers to any of these questions, it is merely a reflection of the question of life itself. it is our duty in life to question these things ourselves as well as the meaning behind it all, including life. | |

i believe all of these would be the correct lyrics but don't hold me to it "i'm gonna walk straight down to the telephone wire cos that's where your parents live" "oh, my calico, you know i said we go to fast to take it slow" "you know i only light a chemical fire when i'm reacting to your touch. we must walk straight down the rock coast in maine where the ocean water will cover us, yeah" "is it hard with such heavy heart" |

these are the wrong lyrics. "she hides like a turtle in her shell, you see she sings when she comes out. she sings when she comes out, she sings when she comes" "straight face and a few one liners, oh my sweet talk is just like sugar on her t t t t t tongue" "this crown means shit, i'm not with the king" |
