Its comparing the girl to sunlight and calling her perfect. "she ionizes and atomizes then turns into sunlight"...."the real lights will make you heavy but never really empty flourescent light will always equal empty" hes saying shes the real thing, shes the sunlight and everything else is the flourescent light, empty. the sun is the source of life for every living thing in the world and isaac brock is saying this girl is the source of life for him. honestly brock is a fucking genius...to compare a girl in such a way that its so subtle and yet so beautiful without it sounding like a sappy love song...holy hell. modest mouse is god...although i do like bellyful of swans interpretation as well. but to me its not about trouble in a relationship hes saying he needs her or he will be empty like a flourescent lightbulb. |

hahahaha (when he's high on shrooms) i think the days of psychopsylicybin are over man, they arent into the psychadelic drugs anymore. the dreadhead surfer skater stoners are out of here im sad to say, we miss them all. but hey that doesnt mean matured incubus isnt good. stellar is now one of their classics though. you cant say you like incubus without knowing song #6 on the make yourself album!!!! |

his girlfriend?? a girl sung with him in Lounge (Closing Time) from their lonesome crowded west album and she also made a slight appearance in "She Atomizes and Ionizes" from their Long Drive album so i just figured it was someone close to them so maybe it was Isaac's girlfriend? i dunno, good song though. not like modest mouse musically but lyrically it hits the spot! |

I think this song isnt just about how flat and boring Ohio, it's about someone having regrets and feeling lonely and blaming it on the "long drive home" the person is driving through a boring country road at night when it's dormant and theyre thinking about the past thats what i think it is
"you're on, you're wrong, ohio" - either hes blaming ohio for his troubles or he just got through a fight with someone and i think "you can't look in one one way eyes" and "pull the scabs off of regret we havent learned to beat our conscience yet" justifies the latter of the two. but there are also references where ohio and his troubles are causing turmoil. ohio is just the scape goat for his troubles, if that makes sense...when im having troubles i seem to blame the stupidest things, and thats what i think of when i listen to this song. one of the best albums ever in history. |

i love this song so much, i couldnt choose my favorite song from their "long drive" album, but this is such a good way to end the cd. i love the build ups and the lyrics and how it just goes. the rest of the cd is about road trips and being alone, and then it ends floating in space. but i think the message is you can't escape lonliness. "shes the only rocketeer in the whole damn place, they gave her a mirror so she could talk to a face" favorite lines! brock is a fuckin genius. in my opinion, modest mouse took the pink floyd approach with developing a story within an album and i love it. but they do regularly develope themes within albums, as do many other artists. brilliant music. |

the metaphor with the birds thing isnt about nature, i think it's about real birds are a symbol of happiness and good and mechanical birds are an imitation "and i said you can't make everybody happy"..mechanical birds/make everybody happy = a robot society with the same feelings and the faults in a monotoned society. |
