| The idea of this song being John telling the girl how much of an asshole with sexy music is matched with these lyrics..."beg my way into your garden" and "break my way out when it rains" so he wants in then gets the heck out when things go bad. But the idea of someone "loving" you for the idea of you is more interesting to me. As with movies, tv and music the idealization and the perfect love is sung about, and shown countless times. I wonder if that really is love or more infatuation. Cause love is taking the good with the bad. Otherwise you're just cherry picking and bound for disappointment. | |

the chorus seems to speak bout the loss of innocence. As someone mentioned before "childhood" was when things were simple. Now he is older with a broken heart he searches for something he can count on. The "why don't we go" seems to be pretty much analyzed to death so I'll just leave it at that. |

repeating what an earlier entry stated, this song is in my opinion how he knows the risks of heartbreak is there but he goes for it anyway cause there is that chance that this maybe it. I mean that's what it is isn't it? to be vulnerable to someone to allow someone to be able to cause you great pain or great happiness. Elliott Smith shifts the balance of power to the girl... "you tell me the morning after " "she'll decide what she wants " "they want you or they don't " the last being probably all his other past loves. Someone else also said that this song was hopeful. I totally agree... the title "Say yes" is like you hoping so much inside that this person your falling is love with will return your affections hence "Say yes". Pleading and yearning, you think in your head "Say yes". The song ends where it began, the girl stayed the morning after. Its just amazing what Elliott Smith did in just over two minutes. |
