| I saw this song close Saratoga 07/02/05 and i noticed the intro to the song, dubbed "the passion intro" is extended a few minutes...just enough to bring XTRA chills down one's spine. Fingers crossed to see it at randalls, what dmb is , is the best! | |

| New fan? GLAD TO HEAR IT! I've come to the end of my rope with the so called "true fans" who've been with the band since they "used to be good" in the late 90's. Im going to rant a little bit here because something has come up and is bothering me. I continually hear from so called "true fans" that this song is not good enough to be the encore closer. WHY WHY WHY is what i want to know...back up your mouths with some reasons, true this song is not hoe-down ants marching or tripping billies, and no, its not off what some consider to be their earlier and better albums...but as an invidividual song it's one of kind. The only thing that matters is how important this song is to Dave and his band, so important that they want to play it to close many of their shows, if you don't like it, then head for your car early but dont' complain about it because that does nothing except spoil the puddin'! | |

| statement retracted and i couldn't be more psyched!!!! what you are is on the ohhhh five summer tour rotation and closing shows! the song that closes the show is a song that means business and that the band not only loves it but loves playing it for their fans. Saratoga around the corner! Keep your eyes peeled on those setlists because it seems they just continue to heat up! | IheartDave: I heart this song too but if you notice the current pattern the band is on, this song does not fit into it. The summer 2005 tour will focus on getting in tune the songs from stand up in a live forum as well as giving everyone the classics they crave, ants, billies, two step, etc etc. This song was pimped out for a VERY long time, as encore closer i have seen it on two occassions, but it is from the EVERYDAY album era which has passed and now a new era beckons. I cannot guarantee it won't be played but all signs point out it won't be (and my friend has this notion that wya is hateful song and dave is not about it's hatefulness any more) I don't know about you, but just from listening to the new album a few times, i can say that i am ready to see how the new songs develop in a live format. (and if you got the new album for free and didn't pay for it, i think you don't deserve to set foot in a venue dave matthews plays in, because you don't respect them as artists and steal and pirate his hard work, sorry, i'll download anything else, but dmb is getting paid for such quality songwriting and composition) I got tickets for spac, randalls, and hartford. I'll be wearing a red sox jersey im sure. Look for me. | |

| In regards to the "hoping to god on high" line, my opinion is this is something one would say if they have no faith in God. Clinging to straws while drowning... u can use a straw to breathe ifyour are near the surface, but if you drowning, it won't do you any good. Aimlessly hoping for God's help is senseless is what I believe he's trying to convey. Glad to see you guys enjoy this as much as I do. This song is just a big reason why many people love dave matthews because not many other musicians can sing: "I give my world to you With all of my heart i do This blood flows through my veins for you You alone have all of me I give my world to you To you I will be true" You can't really come up with a better way of expressing love, passion, and commitment. All of us share a hope in that someone in this world feels this way about us. |

| Let me thank dave and his friends for adding new flavor to this tune, which has been replayed and dissected by me so many times, i would consider myself a sweetupanddownologist. But, a lenghty explanation is not necessarily. Just picture a Dirtay Ol' southern boy writing a song about Sex and throw in alot of gibberish and nonsense and that's what we've got here. | First post here for the kidd, so let me take a moment just to say 'THANK GOD' and 'FINALLY' All of us davefreaks get a chance to express our views on the band's music in an open forum, such a great thing. I decided to go with my first post regarding What You Are because for me, it has been by far the most powerful song, live and recorded, that i have ever witnessed. it's power is INDEED dark, and that would be backed by my buddy's opinion that this song is dave telling all his fans that he doesn't really like them due to the GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES YOU MUTHAFU*KA line and having God on his side. I feel like this song is dave's way of revealing to us that he is just like we are and doesn't understand why we like him so much or think he's so great, and I think that is an added testament to the great human being he is. He's fu*ked up in his own way, and it's normal to assume the worse the worst in most scenarios, so picture an enraged alcoholic (dave a few years ago) writing this song all pissed and violent, lashing out at those who bow down at his feet. WHY WHY WHY he must have been thinking, what makes me so great that you all will cheer even when i say get down on your knees. He walks in the room (venue). All eyes on him (we are watching ) But i do not know the people inside, seeking more wisdom than i have to give away. (i don't even know you people and you are looking to me for answers?) this song is a wild one, and many i know believe it'll never be pulled out again cuz its so dark. But, forget about what it may or may not mean, its so tribal and rocking enough to make me take a closer look at this band a few years back and embark upon a journey of dave shows that has merely just begun. | |
