The Flaming Lips – Do You Realize?? Lyrics 18 years ago
What does this song mean to me... well, lately every time I hear this song I want to run out and put a down payment of a shiny new Land Rover. I mean, cut me some slack, I don't make that much money, so it's taken me awhile to save... but now I think I'm ready. I'm ready for the sheer performance that a luxury SUV like the Land Rover has to offer. And the optional features... rear seat entertainment DVD system, 19-inch six-spoke alloy wheels... and APR financing starting at 3.9%! I've been waiting all my life for a deal this great. So kiddies, come join me at your locacl Land Rover dealer, all are welcome!

Oh... this song is so beautiful that is makes me cry.

The Who – A Quick One While He's Away Lyrics 21 years ago
I'm a big fan of the version used in the film Rushmore, and the album version (from A Quick One) is pretty solid as well.

Fantastic song. I love the story it tells, and the fact that The Who sang "cello, cello" instead of actually using cellos (I think a depleting budget had something to do with it) adds another quirky touch to the song.

Beastie Boys – Ch-Check It Out Lyrics 21 years ago
Kellyness:

The fact that some of the lyrics don't make any sense is another point of the song.

"The Beastie Boys probably just opened up a dictionary to a random page, picked a word, and thought up another word that rhymes with that word." - Kellyness

Exactly! I think the beauty of this song is the Beasties are just rhyming and rapping for fun. They don't have huge egos, they don't need to rap about bitches or money, they just want to rap because they thoroughly enjoy what they get to do for a living.

And cookiemonster0714, I'll agree that some of the Beasties songs aren't very deep. At the same time, a lot of their songs take on serious topics. "Egg Man," my favorite Beasties song, is a perfect example. It has a lot of quirky rhymes and some crazy sampling, but amidst the hilarious lyrics they are actually making a very important statement. A lot of the songs on To the 5 Boroughs take the same direction.

The Who – Sally Simpson Lyrics 21 years ago
tommy5454, here is what happens in the last half of Tommy, to the best of my understanding.

Tommy is treated by the specialist, and he returns home and is forced by either his mother or stepfather to stare into the mirror. He has stared blankly into the mirror his whole life, and they are hoping that the radical new treatment that was tried out on him is going to enable him to see. They ask if Tommy can hear them, and finally, Tommy smashes the mirror as he sees his own face for the first time in his entire life.

He instantly becomes a "Sensation", as people are mesmerized by the formerly deaf, dumb, and blind pinball wizard who has so much to give to the world. People swarm to him, as he is truly a remarkable young man, and people begin to view him as a messiah-type figure. The news reports about a "Miracle Cure", and Tommy's popularity rises. "Sally Simpson" is a sad story of a girl who fell in love with Tommy and wanted to follow him, but it didn't work out in the end. Tommy proclaims that he is free to the whole world. In the song "I'm Free", I think it is just Tommy running around and rocking out in total jubilation.

In "Welcome", Tommy decides to invite his followers to his house so he can teach them about how to live life to the fullest. He understands he is an important person and that people will listen to what he has to say. "Tommy's Holiday Camp" is a little twisted, as Uncle Ernie appears to have some sort of intererst in Tommy's camp. The followers flock to the camp, but for whatever reason decide that a new religion lead by Tommy is not for them, and they revolt. Tommy is all alone, and the album ends with "See Me Feel Me/Listening to You", which, to be a honest with you, I'm a little confused about myself. Tommy and his family have just been beaten and raped by his followers, but the recurring lines of "listening to you, i get the music, gazing at you, i get the heat, following you, i climb the mountain, i get excitement at your feet - right behind you, i see the millions, on you, i see the glory, from you, i get opinions, from you, i get the story." These words are reflective of Tommy's followers, but they have just forsaken him, and don't want to take it from him anymore. I think the ending song just kind of sums up the whole vibe of the album, that Tommy was a magical person who truly had a lot to give to the world, even if it didn't all work out in the end.

Hope that helps!

Yeah, absolutely fantastic song. Tommy very well may be my favorite album of all-time, and this song is one of the reasons why. I just love the whole concept behind the album.

The Who – Baba O'Riley Lyrics 21 years ago
Um, I'm not sure if this song is about Vietnam or Woodstock or anything like that. I personally believe it is about the youth of the world and how they often feel lost in their surroundings. When this song came out, a lot of shit was going down in the world, and a lot of kids probably felt pretty uncertain about what their futures were going to be like. Very reflective of the tumultuous time that was the 1960's.

Foghat – Slow Ride Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is so bad ass. I think it is one of the best rock 'n roll songs I have ever heard. It just rocks out hardcore for like 8 minutes. I love every single second of it.
