This song is about empowering yourself through taking action and responsibility. We all have plans/dreams about how we want our lives to workout. There's an expectation that it will happen 'to' us, but this song is saying that 'you' must make it happen. I love the lyric "been training vipers to come for you, in your sleep." It's like something within you wont let you just forget about what your purpose is, it wont let settle for anything less than what you dreamed for. So it sends you these fears to shake you out of your slumber, to make you take action. I also love the "I've got a taste for blood".... that is like this person has been woken up and is going for it. They ain't gunna stop for anything. They've realised it's all up to them. They will no longer hold themselves back by taking responsibility for the victims in their life "leave the weak, leave the young", "I'm walking out without you." |

Ok,l Hey guys. Pandaman, I wont challenge you, but this is my view. Meaning of song: It's talking about the process of being in the moment. When you "let go", you start feeling new truths and beauty. You see the truth, you are not clouded by fear/ego. Letting go makes room for new life. "There's beauty in the breakdown", because it's the process of letting go old beliefs and getting to new light. You stop chasing happiness, you become happiness. You can only truly BE something when your in the moment/connected to life. "So let go, just get in!.... it's so amazing here". The rest is just breaking down the meaning in some of the lyrics: "Excuse me, too busy writing your tradgedy". (love this line, funny) -About giving up, don't give hope a chance. Focused on the pain and depression. Don't even attempt to find happiness. "...when you've got no idea what your like". -You've got no right to judge yourself because from your perspective you cannot see who you really are. Your vision of yourself is blinded by your fear/ego. Others can see you and know your beauty, this is what is the truth. "So let go, let go, just get in". -LET GO OF IT! Let go of your pain, let go of a disired result. Let go of expectation. Let go of the fear.... When you do this you make room for new life/love. Letting go lets life flow. It's talking about being in the moment. "There's beauty in the breakdown". -The process is beautiful! The breakdown is beautiful because it leads to change. Breaking down old beliefs which created a life that no longer serve you and making way for the new. Breakdown = Breakthrough. It's a time for new beauty. Change is beautiful. "Oh it's so amazing here". -Talking about the being in the moment. When you are in the moment everything is perfect. It is connected to life and love. It's those moments when you get a feeling that everything is perfect and beautiful, those moments when you know the truth of who you are with no doubt, because fear is no longer present to create that doubt. "It gains the more it gives". -You give, you receive. "Rises with the fall". - Breakdown leads to new happiness. Growth. "So hand me that remote, can't you see all that stuff's a sideshow". - Television, computer games, etc... it's all just a distraction. PROCRASTINATION. The only way your going to be happy is if you face yourself. "Such boundless pleasures, we've no time for later now". - Once you're in the moment you experience boundless pleasures. True love, contentmeant, peace, joy, excitement, happiness... all without condition. You can't leave this stuff till later, because the moment is now. There's no point in putting it off, you only hurt yourself. "You can't await your own arrival". - YOU have to choose to make this move. It does not happen to you. No one can save you but yourself. God/Life is always with you but loves you too much to do your work for you. If god did that, you would never grow and become who you truly are. Big entry but lots of truths here. Hope you can hear it! PS: I gotta say that the meaning that YOU get from a song is what's important, whatever you relate is relevant and perfect for where you are. |

I think the title, 'champagne from a paper cup' is summing up the kind of environment the song is set in. It comes across to me with a lot of emptiness, people trying to drink away their sorrows. The the line "I Think i'm drunk enough to drive you home now" is hinting at a kind of destructive state hes in. Like he drunk enough to cause a crash now. Thats just the feelings I got from them. |

Yeah I think you definately on the right track Been24. The other posts I read about it being solely about suicide didnt really seem to fit, but what you said seems to ring true. It seems like its about being attracted to that "classy, social" lifestyle, but turns out to be a very empty, lifeless existence which ultimately leads to you getting deeper and deeper into the death of it. |

Thats a really true observation keyz48, I never realized that. buts its true :) Emogreen, I hate what you said about "men give love for sex, women give sex for love". I really dont think Ben Gibbard is talking about how he lied to some chick to nail her. Its like the relationship between him and this girl got deeper for her than for him, very quickly, and he felt almost angry that he wasnt feeling what she did. And he didnt know what to do because he did care for her, but he didnt love her, and to tell her this would obvisouly crush her. So instead he had guilty, empty sex with her. Now Im sure that he wouldnt have had any enjoyment from this, so there wouldnt really be any point in the saying that "men give love for sex", at least not in this situation. Because why would you pretend to love something just to get sex that you didnt enjoy? |

I think Tylera is right. I dont believe he is talking about making any physical accomplishments at all (making it in the music industry), its about making spiritual accomplishments... He is singing about finding freedom from all the bullshit :) About realizing all our self doubts and negative beliefs are not true. That we really are bigger than our bodies give us credit for. There's no better way of putting it :) |

Hey guys, i just gotta say that it is the feeling you get from something that is important, and is the truth. It doesnt actually matter whether the physical thing is fictitious or not. I have felt lots of things about songs that turn out to not actually be what the song is about, and I used to get a little bummed out, because i figured that what I was feeling musnt be the truth. I have now realised that its the feeling that is the important part. Btw great song too :) I love the change in the music after the 3rd verse. Its like the first part is kind of hiding the true feelings of the words, being so pretty and light. But then after the third verse the music expresses the real anger that was felt from the father. |

First off this is such a beautiful, truthful song. It brings me such a reasuring message. I dont agree with prefet's interpretation :). The way I interpret it is not so specific. I think its stating that in every way, at every moment we are surrounded by love. It's in everything, always there, within us and trying to get our attention. But we are so stuck within the 'real world' that we miss it, we miss out on the beauty, and the truth. The magic that is really happening. It says that to see this magic all we have to do is "twist our heads around", change our direction. Seeing it is all to do with us and nothing to do with the truth. "All is full of Love", "You just ain't receiving". The best thing is that even if we don't see it, it will still always be there, trying for our attention until we finally wake up. Thats just my opinion anyway :), but im glad I have it. |
