| AFI – Endlessly, She Said Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
It sounds like to me someone came, (walked into our world...) and stole someone he loved, and he feels betrayed becuase she did not wait for him like he promised. This theme is revisited in On The Arrow as well. The only thing that throws me off is that he's using the pronous "she" and the pro noun "you." Are the she and the you two different people? "You will outlast my love..." so maybe the person he loved was not the 'she' being referred to? This owuld make sense becuase he also calls the same she "misery" (so spoke misery) So maybe this 'she' stole the person he loved away from him, If I were bold enough to say so. I really don't know, the pronouns don't line up. |

Ok. People have all agreed that this is a "good song" and decided upon their favorite part. Please don't forget this is a site dedicated to SONG MEANINGS. Not favorite parts. We can all agree that it is a beautiful song. So as for the meaning....it sounds as if he's trying to convince a lover to stay with him. There are many sexual references in this song, ie, "velvet burns..." and "part your lips a bit more." Also, has anyone else noticed parallels between songs on STS and DU? For instance, there are many similarities between Kiss and Control and This Celluloid Dream. 1. The flim references. We all want to die like movie stars, Cinematic, celluloid, cutting room floor. 2. Lights, dancing. Lovely dancing lights, reeling debutants, city lights... 4. sex. part your lips a bit more, velvet burns wrists while restraining, bite marks, sunk into velvet, onto the melting boy... They just share alot of themes. It's somehting to take into consideration. |

*sighs* I hate the sell out vs. not sell out arguments. That's not the point of this site. get over it and keep the opinions concerning the band to yourself becuase we're supposed to be analyzing the potantial meaning of songs here. The lyrics, not the music. The end. Though a clear meaning for this song evades me, it does give a feeling of a betrayed lifestyle, (possibly sXe.) "designer drug" "How could you run on such voltage?" (substance abuse.) So, possibly someone who said they lived the sXe lifestyle but did not remain true. "I remain the one to blame" The writer feels responsible for putting so much trust into this person "purified" --drug free However, certain parts seem to pertain to a relationship. "love these screams like I do" So perhaps the writer is comparing a betrayal in a friendship or relationship to breaking edge? |

I actually see references to prostitution, or perhaps the life of a Hollywood elite or Jettsetter sick of the fake like thier leading. Davey said this was the first album in which he was writing from a point of view other than his own, so therefore it would make sense that the theme is not that of a traditional AFI song. |
|
| AFI – On The Arrow Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song has three point of views I think. The she, he, and you. So Davey could be singing about a he unrelated from himself. I hope that made sense... | |
| The Dresden Dolls – Coin-Operated Boy Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I think its about being betrayed by a real man who is of course imperfect, so she finds this coin operated boy, (which is probably representative of a sex toy). i didnt think so but im still convinceable will you persist even after i bet you a billion dollars that i'll never love you will you persist even after i kiss you goodbye for the last time will you keep on trying to prove it? i'm dying to lose it... I htink these lines she's talking to the man who betrayed her and shes trying to still love this coin operated boy, of the fake version of love, even though she still loves this man who hurt her. I think its basically about a woman who is trying to replace a lost love with a fake love and convincing herself that this coin operated love is enough compared to the asshole who dumper her but she can't halp loving. |

| The Dresden Dolls – Girl Anachronism Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Schizophrenia. thats what I think it's about...or just mental illness in general. It must be strange to be told when you have a mental illness becuase the way you are seems normal to you, becuase its the way you are. It seems like people are trying to make you conform to society by taking medication and getting operations when in reality, the disorder IS your normal. its your life and constant. amazing song, my art teacher made me turn it off becuase it was "too high maintenence" for her. hell. | |
| The Dresden Dolls – Gravity Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| No! I thought so too! Suicide and self doubt BOTH relate to anorexia, bulimia, and alcoholism. I think it may be about that year in Germany where she CONTEMPLATED suicide...and all the forces seemed out of her control. (friends leaving, ect.) I love the way its compared to a lack of gravity almost as much as i love the dubious meanings of their songs. Brilliant. | |
| The Dresden Dolls – Half Jack Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Um, I don't think she is a transsexual, but thats a very interesting idea. I'd love it. BUt anyway, when i first heard this song, (my favorite on the album, ny the way,) i figured it was about a demonic possession or multiple personality disorder. Taking a closer analytical look at the lyrics i assume that it is about her father, but about multiple personality disorder...girl anachromism has always struck me as being about Schizophrenia, so i seemed to think amanda has a bit of a preoccupation with mental illness, you know? i mean, bad habit? the obbsession in the jeep song? chronic lonliness in coin operated boy? i don't know. I love this song though. absolutely. | |
| Jimmy Eat World – Night Drive Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I completely agree with MonaLisa. I think its a beautiful song that's mood conflicts with the meaning and i'm very surprised that no one else has posted that its about date rape. | |
| AFI – Dancing Through Sunday Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| JADE, STILL PLAYIN!! he's thanked on every alblum. | |
| AFI – Dancing Through Sunday Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| ok i think this song is about homosexuality. I'm not implying that davey is Gay or Bi or anything, but thats just what it means to me, about me. 'beauty that will horrify' the love is beautiful but alot of people find it wring or repulsive. 'have no chance in this horrid ronamce' its romance but within the circumstances it's dangerous. 'let me hide within the black still inside your eyes' hide me in the dark, hide from the scary homophobes, that theme. The second verse reminds me of sex as well. 'wioll you join me in this dance of misery cradled in impossibility' you know it could never work but you love them so much. yeah, just baisucally that. please dont flame me for that. | |
| AFI – The Great Disappointment Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| davey doesnt subscribe to one organized religion, but i'm pretty sure he believes in reincarnation. (check out the lyrics to LSP2 and you'll know what i mean.) email me at robertntrudy@earthlink.net if you want his direct quotes on religious beliefs. This song to me means two things. One being a loss of faith, pretty much what everyone else said about the religious theme. two being a loss of innocence in the form of molestation. I was molested and it just fits, how at the beginning you think it's ok becuase it's all you ever know and when you get older you realize that someone took advantage of you as a child. The boy who destroyed the world also seems to have the same theme. | |
| AFI – The Last Kiss Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| tigerAFIarmy- me too. not for the same reasons, but i was having cutting problems, the song helped me. Same with Narrative soul against soul. As for the meaning, i think it relates to being absolutely desperate for someone you know won't love you back to feel the same, so instead of telling them, you brood and grovel alone and the depression manifests into something else, (cutting, this case.) He also seems to be portraying that he's afriad that if he reveals his true feelings to this person, that they'll reject him. The insects and needles to me represent the constsnt feeling and reminder that this person will never feel the same. Great song, great alblum, great band. | |
| AFI – Of Greetings And Goodbyes Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| i hate how people on this site always say, 'ITS ABOUT THIS, NOT THAT!!' davey is the only one who knows what it really is about, and i think we should all be opwn to eachother's opinions without calling other people off. You take what you need from a song, thats what his motive is. I personally think this song is about two people meeting at night to have sex and leaving in the morning. make me invisible- a forbidden love. Asking a parterner to make me invisible, tuck me in, protect me all through the night, (we'll glow till morning comes) becuase they know that in the morning you have to leave again. the beauties are sleeping- while everyone else is sleeping, they meet. I was at a summer camp, in which a girl in my cabin and i fell in love. We'd have to run off at night into a vancant cabin to have sex, and in the morning pretend like nothing had happened, becuase the pther occupants of the campwere homophobic rednecks. of greetings and goodbyes reminds me of that time in my life. the monsters part may relate to the fear of being walked in on. (no need to worry it is just another monster, no one can see me in this secret show) | |
| AFI – Wester Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| autumn, of course. Davey is obbsessed with fall. and about afi never writing love songs...well i dissagree, i think that davey likes to write lyrics that can be intreprted in many different ways. we already know tha boys like to keep us guessing, in more ways than one. i think that this song is about forbidden love, fitting in with the silver and cold and a winter's tale theme. i may be wrong.this is my orgasm song, i worship it. | |
| AFI – Silver And Cold Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| reading an above comment, i totally and completely agree with something pugetgirl said. a gay relationship. i hold a strong belief in the javey rumors, and the video helpd that alot. in hard rock live, davey says "oh my beautiful one" and jade mouths it and points. ok, i'm done. if anyone here is against javey, im sorry if i offend. | |
| AFI – This Celluloid Dream Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
i hate it when people say "this song is obviously about..." you don't know what it's about. Only Dave does. sheesh. Anyway, i personally believe that this song relates to a lover who is so excusite, cinematic, radiant, all the things he's calling she or he, yet they don't return the love. "in the glitter in the dark, sunk into velvet, praying this will never end," makes me think of sex, definately. but "realized i never began" could be waking from a dream. The movie theme is definately there, i think that it's referring to the fact that to davey, this person is so beuatiful that they belong on film. On another note, this past summer i fell in love with a girl i knew for a week and a week only. She was straight, yet we'd hold eachother at night and confess love. It was a very weird relationship that occurred at a summer camp, and this celluloid dream seemed to relate it perfectly and eerily. Of course, AFI's lyrics do that often to me. ah well. Great song. |

| AFI – The Lost Souls Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| whoa. Its not about christianity, nor mocking it, as far as i know. IM me at ucon222 if you want to know davey's view on the christian religion, i have a quote. I personally believe that the song is talking about loving soemone to the point of obbsession. if you cant stand...that whole part referring to following this person anywhere, doing anything for them. the misery...he will rid the peson of their burdens and problems, ( same as the take my hand i'll take everything from you line) contract my disease, maning you'll fall as deep in love with me as i am with you, look what youve dont to me now, (davey is being tricky and making it sound acusatory..) youve completed me. yes, i think its a love song. | |
| AFI – The Boy Who Destroyed The World Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| im on here is to state my sudden discovery. ok, im wrting an essay about anti bushness and my experience at the vietnam war memorial. and i caughtmyself unconciously writing " i felt more desperately alone, even thou they'd wrapped their arms around me as id fallen." referring to the comfert given to me by friends who didnt realize why i was crying. it kind of scared me how it fit. then i was like, "the boy who destryoed the world" BUSH. and i know that it was written beofre he was in office, but i thought id share what it meant to me. and i agree with the loss of innocene theory above. | |
| AFI – Silver And Cold Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| ok dont kill me when i say what i think its about. i tihnk that davey is portraying another forbidden love, hence your sins into me. Yet, he loves this person so much he is willing to give up everyhting and anything for him/her. the video totally crashed this opinion, but it can be looked at from several different ways. i love this song, it actually got me into afi, although i prefer their black sails era. watch the video! | |

| ok. everyone. please stop saying, "its about" you dont know what its about, only davey does! grr. ah well, anyway, i think you all have soemting going for you, they all very well could mean those things. I always thought ut was refering to afi's early start, but i may be wrong. The ship tihng...*blink* definately soemting i want to look into. And the thing about his freinds dying, iv'e never heard of any of that stuff. And afipunk01, they grew up not in berkley, but in ukiah. | |
| AFI – A Winter's Tale Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| i have always personally thought that davey was relating to a forbidden love scene based on the shakespere play. dave has a thing for clandestine affair and forbidden love, (wester) so i think that he and a lover have escaped to a beautiful winter scene and they are enjoying eachothers company and wishing that they were allowed to have one night together. | |
