oh please you oversensitive weenies. I was making a joke. Elliott Smith is my all-time favorite artist, but that doesn't mean every single artistic decision he made was a brilliant one. And I do like Weezer (guilty pleasure, so what?) |

the mispelled name on the suicide note was a typo on the police report.
the fact that he wrote lyrics alluding to suicide proves nothing and wouldn't stand up in court as more than circumstancial evicence. Unless he wrote in a song "on october 21st, i am going to stab myself in the heart with a dirty kitchen knife", the words he wrote don't prove a thing. Granted, I don't deny the possibility of suicide, but I think it's highly unlikely after reading the autopsy report.
anyway, one of 2 things is definitely true: 1. the girlfiend did it or 2. elliott was a HUGE jerk for killing himself mid-argument with his girlfriend, as she would obviously be implicated in his death.

In defense of "overanalyzing the lyrics" as some are accusing... I think the important thing to do when you read a good book or hear a song that really sticks with you ... is not so much to identify the artist's intent, but to make connections. We connect the words of the song to personal experiences and things we know. I think the high volume of posts to this board is a testament to the many interpretations of the song. Obviously this is not something Elliott wrote while watching TV (though I think it's funny that he claimed that). Anyway, my point is the message boards are a good exercise... I like to see what connections other people with different life experiences make. The point isn't to find the one true meaning of a song, but to open your mind a little. |

not sure if it helps anyone but King's Cross is a major train station in London. That's what I thought of when I first saw the title of this song.
Anyway, I agree with the previous poster... Writing about suicide and actually doing it are two totally different things. I know that y'all like to see the poetic justice in writing an album that reads like a suicide note. but I also know that people don't generally stab themselves to death in middle of heated arguments... and I also know that most people know enough not to remove knives from stab victims... I'm just saying is all.... |

Here is a link to a tribute radio show about Elliott. Listen in at about 37 minutes for a good introduction to this song. This is why I think the song is an extended metaphor that was deliberately written to have 2 or more meanings...

| Elliott Smith – Son of Sam Lyrics

Son of Sam didn't kill couples though, he killed women. I don't think this song is about him, because there are too many references that wouldn't apply to him.
What does this line mean: son of a doctor's touch, a nurse's love ... it kind of bugs me for some reason. |

"all spit and spite you're up all night and down every day"
I think that's more like, you're up all night on amphetamines and pretty much just feel like crap the next day. |

This is the best song about addiction I have ever heard. The first time I listened to it, it made cry. There are many songs about drug addiction, but usually they are about battles with the drug itself and not about the personal relationships it destroys. This song seems so private, that it is almost uncomfortable to hear. How brilliant to write the lyrics from the standpoint of a girlfriend who is jealous of this other "lady". |

I agree with Yoloko. This song is about suffering you cause yourself because of your idea of perfection.
"I waited half my life away" - time he probably could have spent being happy, if he wasn't fixated on the "miracle" |

this is a French folk song from WW2. My favorite line is "she died without a whisper". That is so freaking eerie... |

Doesn't it occur to anyone that this song can be about BOTH? It's about love and it's about addiction. "Between the bars" means both a prison and literally bars (as in where they serve alcohol). Also, maybe it means between the bars of the song?
That is what makes this song great. It has a double meaning, and it was intended to have a double meaning. |

This has been bugging me for a while now. When he meets her again, she doesn't recognize him. Why doesn't he tell her who he is? I get lost in the second half of this song.
Also, the only Italian poet from the 13th century that I could think of is Dante. That's not really a romantic poet to be reading. |
