I love this song. I remember watching an interview with her on her website http://www.suzannevega.com/index.htm where she talked about this. It's about a 8 or 9 year old little boy (I can't remember which age she said) being abused.
She also talked about a boy who lived upstairs from her in one of her old apartments named Luka who WASN'T abused. It obviously didn't bother him because she says he went back to her old apartment to get her former roommate to prove to a girl that Suzanne Vega had really lived there. Nice way to pick up chicks. I first heard about this song on Suzanne Vega's website where she says it's about flirting or something. :P |

I just think it's about an immoral woman who'll suck you in with her charms and such. |

Actually, I'm pretty sure that the song is about killing a man and regretting it and wanting mercy because he's just a poor boy. |

I don't think it's a Christian band, I mean, God's actually really good writing material, so I wouldn't say that should be considered positive proof. *lol* But they don't seem like one to me in the least. And if they were, there probably wouldn't be a debate over it.
As for this song, I love it and I guess I'd have to say that I think it's about a girl who's dying, after trying to commit suicide, and afraid God won't forgive her for this "sin." (I'm not sure how many other churches have gone this route, but I think churches don't really see this as a sin anymore, and acknowledge a mental health problem instead.) |

I really love this song. And I believe it's allowing this woman to prove her morals. Her morality is being questioned, and she's basically telling them to look at things through her eyes. To put themselves in her shoes. I think it's just telling people to look at things from another point-of-view before judging somebody.
"Well, yeah. All those people are right. There's no doubt about it, you're the one in the wrong. Keep in mind, though Setsuna, none of your prosecutors has ever been in your shoes. These people are all observing from the gallery, smugly dispensing the smart but unoriginal moralist cliché. You really love Sara, don't you? Then you can't help it. You're the one who go hurt, the one who does the suffering. It's not something anybody else can understand...." - Kira, Angel Sanctuary |

Well, I don't know if this is based on a true story, if that's what you mean SexyAshlyRose. All I know is that it was originally sung by Bobbie Gentry and pretty much what the song is talking about. (As it's pretty self-explanatory.) But if she based off true events, I don't know.
I usually don't care for country songs, but I could always handle this song for whatever reason. :P |
