heres my take on this song... what i believe maynard means when he says "im the man and youre the man and hes the man as well" is that: when people usually say something about "the man" they usually mean that there is someone or something out there that is keeping them back from their aspirations. but what maynard is saying is that the only thing that can hold you back is yourself. so therefore everyone is "the man" themselves. when it comes to the lyrics " i sold my soul to make a record.. and you bought one" hes saying: when a band signs a record deal they are agreeing to make a music album (their soul) for money, in essence selling their soul for money. pretty much the rest of the song is just making fun of people who change their self image consantly according to the media. im still in debate with myself whether he says "sips of coke" or "sniffs of coke" tho.... |

well maybe im not freaked out too much but im not really scared by this song. well now to my real comment... but at least the first 2 parts seemingly are about vegitarians. the first part to me is mainly just a jab at religious fanatics and psycho vegitarians. the second part is more clear than the other parts. "life feeds on life". no matter what, in order for life to survive it has to eat other life, theres no way around it. and for the last part i really doubt anyone will ever find the meaning to this unless maynard directly says what it means, which is unlikey. |

the song to me is about denying that a friend has a drug problem. "Best to keep things in the shallow end Cause I never quite learned how to swim" this means that the person hasnt ever learned how to deal with major problems and prefers to just deny that they are real. "I close my eyes, Ignore the smoke" means just ignore what is happening. i.e. the smoke of the drug (pot pcp etc.) "Call an optimist, she's turning blue Such a lovely color for you Call an optimist, she's turning blue While I just sit and stare at you " this means that the addict is slowly chokeing themselfs . im unsure what call an optimist is supposed to mean but i believe i have a fairly good idea of what this song is about. |

| its most unlikely but i just finished reading "all quiet on the western front" and i think the song could be about world war one, or at least the book. "red and yellow then came to be", there were two red and yellow butter flies in chapter 6 that landed on the skull of a fallen soilder; that was what got me thinking about this song. the song could be about losing your innocence through war, most of the lyrics fit. its a bit of a stretch but it could be about ww1 or just war in general. | |

| thank your very much fish eat steel, thank you. ive been trying to say that for a while now. i personally am an existentialist, if you dont know what it means look it up, but anyway back to the "song". i havnet liked pod ever and i really cant believe they would put out a "song" like this. if i followed this song example i could put out a song saying "dont let those queers marry! dont let those queers marry!" does anyone see anything wrong with that? by the way if a song only has one basic phrase in it it isnt a good song no matter what the content of it is. | |

| in responce to n3odi and everyone else complaining about everyone posting about drug themes, in case you didnt read the album cover the album is called "the thirteenth step". if you still dont see the clear drug insuation in it, i will point it out to you, its a refrence to the 12 step program for drug addicts in recovery. and maynard has said on many occasions that this album is about drugs in all forms. also if you dont see how this song can be about drugs from the drugs point of view, please, just think about it, if thats not too far of a stretch for your brain. | |

i personally have heard this song too many times to count and it seems to me that it can be very ambiguous. The first one being the obvous, drug addiction. but i also think that it could have a meaning about for example, a child wanting a bottle or a gift. another one i found was about possably terrorists. maybe i have just heard too many jokes about it but i could have a meaning that the terrorists want the 72 virgins in the afterlife. and the last one i can think of right now is george bush starting the war in iraq for oil. thats all i can think of right now. maynard is awsome |
