Am I the only one who see the whole "I'm alright" as less of a declaration, but more of an attempt to convince herself? Like, the relationship broke up and she's not over him entirely but knows she needs to move on. She's also angry and hurt, she knows she still rocks and can go out and have a great time. even in the music video you see that short bit where she's chopping down the tree and she starts to break up and bit and then is mouths "I'm alright" real fast.
It's after a break up, after the initial freak out, where everything is just starting to get normal again, but you still miss them, yet are angry. Hence the "tool".
She's said publicly she'll always love Carey, so I feel this is at least somewhat accurate. |

I think that, unlike what smellykellyjay said, that the girl is still in love with him but broke up with him anyway, it is a possibility that the "I love you but I'm not in love with you" card was played. |
