Rush – Vital Signs Lyrics 16 years ago
What I really love is the way the guitar plays over the top of the rest, its almost like a sine or cosine wave. Some times he strums on the beat, other times it on the half, but taken as a whole, its fluid and, like the lyrics, its scientific (unstable condition a symptom of life - the opposite of which is a stable condition/entropy/equilibrium all equal death. google "far from equilibrium dynamics"), yet draws the boundaries on what the extremes are (reverse polarity).

And yes, I agree, Rush enjoyed creating a framework for each album, and this one is no different. Its kind of sad that most albums now are just one or two good songs packed around a bunch of second rate bs. No coherence, no message, no nothing. The entire album is great, its almost like one gigantic song.

Queens of the Stone Age – I'm Designer Lyrics 16 years ago
The line, My Piano is for Sale, if I am not mistaken, is a quote from Elton John. Similar to the stanza of the song, Elton was referring to how everyone has a price on their heads whether they know it or not. When the people he was speaking with balked, he remarked, hey, even my piano is for sale - pointing to the one he used in Candle in the Wind (Marilyn Monroe/Princess Diana). I cant find any sources, but I swear I remember hearing that somewhere. Queens just totally rock- when is the new album coming out? I am dying!!

Beck – Little One Lyrics 16 years ago
i like to believe it is about a dream of breaking away, following your dreams through life, trying to hold onto them when everything is changing around you and pushing you further away. Maybe the "little one" is inside all of us, the part of us that holds these dreams so dear. or maybe i am just projecting :)

Rise Against – Collapse (Post-Amerika) Lyrics 17 years ago
Note 1: all vegans are vegetarians but not vice versa. Vegans don't consume milk, eggs, etc. Nothing from an animal.

Note 2: these guys sound like a bunch of whiners. I am all for keeping our little fish bowl called Earth livable, but to say that the air we breathe is so polluted that were choking and that all our crops are dying is just a bunch of reactionary post-thinking exaggerated horse hockey. The constant drone of the "no future" generation is pathetic, and to be more to the point, calling things black or white when there's lots of grey out there smacks of adolescent expressions and not much in the way of critical thought. Just my two cents. Flame away if you must, but when I hear this song, I think I am being brainwashed by middle school greenies who are long on doomsdays and short on truth.

The Rolling Stones – Time Waits For No One Lyrics 17 years ago
When I was a kid I thought that this song was just a cliche, with the constant refrain of the chorus: time waits for no man, rolling through my head. I never gave it much thought or appreciation until I began listening to the stones religously again. Wow. What a mistake to state the obvious.

Star crossed in pleasure the stream flows on by. As were sated in leisure, we watch it fly. Wow. F+ing wow. I can almost see someone younger not able to truly appreciate or grasp time or the good things in life, that when we are in our youth we're just taking it all for granted and watching it go by like the stream, not realizing that we are in the stream and that it has a beginning and an end.

But the best line:

Men, they build towers to their passing yes, to their fame everlasting.
Here he comes chopping and reaping, hear him laugh at their cheating.

I see the egyptian pyramids and greek acropolis and hear the god of time's blade cutting it all down bit by bit as he is laughing. Laughing at how they tried to cheat him, how they tried to cheat time. For isn't time just a different shade of life and death?

this song is so much more than just the chorus. I am almost convinced it was written purposefully with so many choruses to lull the casual listener, and hide the deeper meaning. Its brilliant, and nothing like the tripe on the radio today. Songs about bling and cars and women, all about blowing up and how great they are... don't you hear that? Here he comes chopping and reaping, laughing at their cheating!!!

Elliott Smith – Alphabet Town Lyrics 21 years ago
this song makes me miss the old East Village so much... the bars and spots were so gritty and home to the notorious needle park. it was a hole within the hole, but times have changed and now its this hip, gotta be place. so sad. there was this bar, Wally's, that was named after a bum who hung out there a lot and drank (when he had the money). Its now infested with DJs and special people.

Sounds like Elliot was out with a friend (Constantina?), and she drank him way under the table- "you threw up whatever she shot down." there are so many bars in that area you can literally do a crawl and wind up in as bad a shape as he sounds in this song. What a great song.

Elliott Smith – Angeles Lyrics 21 years ago
doesnt "poison arms" refer to his years of heroine addiction and the result that it had on him? his poison arms? or does he mean the arms of the music "industry"? It can definitely be poisonous. I am up in the air on this one, if its about drugs alone, it doesnt make sense, and having worked in the industry, yeah I can vouch for his thoughts. All I know is that its a great song, he was so brilliant.
