Fillip is something that makes someone work - and the name is spelt Phillip. I think it's about moving on from someone who he was really close to (i think an old friend) but the split was less than happy and the pain of the memories is making him try harder to move away:

I think the reunion bit shows what it's about - people coming back and seeing old friends/acquantances and asking what rivers (or whoever the song is about) has done in his life, and he knows he's got nothing to say, and the "if you want to destroy my sweater" is a metaphor for his life - he doesn't want them to ask more questions because, like it says, his life will be unraveled as he shows he has nothing to show for his life |

This is the most powerful song i've ever heard - the solo has the best use of guitar effects i've ever heard and matt's voice is so emotional, especially on the chorus "for one moment..." and the quiet bridge. It's about meeting new people who seem friendly but turn out not to care and end up either ignoring or backstabbing him in my opinion. I like xfinchfanx's opinion too. |
