Elbow – Our Little Boat Lyrics 17 years ago
I think he's being promiscuous to learn skills and make himself feel like a man, telling himself he's not doing any harm, but he's regretting it

amazing, why do elbow leave some of their best songs off albums?

Elbow – Snowball Lyrics 18 years ago
the rest is probably about how the victims of the war will come back to haunt bush/blair long after they've retired from office. the best line is about how all the political "white lies" used to justify the war result in the destruction of civilians' lives and homes.

Elbow – Mexican Standoff Lyrics 20 years ago
Pretty much seems to be about two men after one woman. Maybe she was going out with the other man but is now going out with the narrator, or maybe she's deciding now. Either way there's some competition involved. This might be something to do with Guy's relationship with Edith Bowman, and maybe even about how she went out with Editors' Tom Smith after Guy and her broke up. Could be written about any relationship of his though it's hard to tell. Great song.

Elbow – Forget Myself Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this is just about being alone at a party or club, maybe he's just broken up with someone. The first verse is maybe him watching other people on their night out in the town on his way there, with all the neon lights of the clubs and take-aways. He picks a plot (bar/club) to try and socialise and make a new start. He talks about the doorman while he's entering or queuing up, his head is probably bald and slightly red resembling Mars. He probably a bit round and looks like a baby, standing there folding his arms, he has the power to refuse entry to anyone like how a genie can grant you wishes. He's surrounded by all this filth yet he remains calm in his nice suit with his mace on standby.
Then i think the main part of the song is where Guy's asking you if you're the kind of person who is a bit apprehensive like him, who feels everyone else is finding partners, and who worries about how he looks to other people. He is so desperate for attention and acceptance that he feels attracted to any woman, perhaps those who talk to him, or maybe ones he's watching. The chorus could be him thinking about his ex girlfriend, how he wont forget her, but can forget his own problems if the city helps him recover.

Thievery Corporation – Lebanese Blonde Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't think blidge is even right, I think it's always "The clouds drifting through the blinds." Also I think the second version of the chorus is "I have a million thoughts, flowing through my mind." Could be wrong though.

Elbow – Snooks (Progress Report) Lyrics 20 years ago
This is about Snooks Eaglin, a blues musician. Guy bought some old blues vinyls when he needed some inspiration writing Cast Of Thousands. In an interview he spoke about how the record by Snooks got worse towards the end as the musicians get more and more drunk. These were the days before they had real production and you'd just record it once. This laid back recording method inspired Elbow relax abit more instead of obsessing over tweaking the little details on their songs and so this is a tribute to him.

Elbow – Fallen Angel Lyrics 20 years ago
In an interview Guy said this song's about a "cool late night scene" where there's a beautiful young girl that everyone in the town is after. She then falls pregnant and the father could be one of several people and suddenly no one wants anything to do with her. Guy wrote this about a true story about a girl he knew but her and the baby and doing fine.

Elbow – Switching Off Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is about your final thoughts before death, and how you can choose them now. I think the first verse is the old man dying, with his most treasured memory replaying in his head. He chooses his "final scene." Guy's talking about how he wants this to be a perfect experience with a loved one, and he talks about saving a specific memory and keeping it precious in a metaphorical trinket until he dies. He even admits in the chorus that this is a complex idea to try to put in a song when he says "Is this making sense?"

Interpol – Roland Lyrics 20 years ago
Bobster, if it was so obvious that it was about Jack the Ripper and everyone else is so stupid for not noticing, why did you need to ask Kessler? Did Kessler even write the lyrics? You arrogantly called everyone else dense for not knowing something you probably weren't sure of yourself and hence needed confirmation. If you really believe in freedom of speech and personal interpretation you'll argue properly and not just resort to insults. You're not here to ridicule others, you say? Yes you are, everything you've said has in one way or another insulted someone or everyone. You called Ethilien a "jackass" for posting an innocent idea. I haven't read the book s/he's talking about, but maybe you should before you go calling him/her an idiot for making the connection. If you read it maybe you'd actually understand why they think that and why it's hard to believe you. You start trying to belittle Ethilien by claiming they're really young when half of what you've said is immature crap about them crying and fingerpainting. You show even more signs of someone who's run out of things to say by calling them dumb for not checking something as pethetic as the post dates in this "rediculous" flame war. Personally, I do believe that the song was probably about Jack the Ripper, it makes alot of sense. Anyway, you could both be right or both be wrong, at least Ethilien had the maturity to present it as a perfectly respectable theory. You can't know what Banks was thinking when he wrote the lyrics.

Queens of the Stone Age – Mexicola Lyrics 20 years ago
It's annoying how this is one of their best songs and it's still only got 4 posts, when their new singles have got loads. I agree with Nick Oliveri, the new album's not as good as any of their old stuff. Anyway, I think the line "It's that same on song again" is wrong and it's "It's that same old song again."

Editors – Munich Lyrics 20 years ago
Maybe about a relationship breaking up? He says how she's careless and treats people badly, but he was still glad it happened. He thinks about how they fail when you don't try. She breaks up with him and (maybe someone else) sits there with him and calms him down while he's upset and angry. Or something...

Editors – Blood Lyrics 20 years ago
I think the 2nd to last line is "It will/would flow to every part," maybe there are just different versions though. Good song, probably about someone who lies all the time and he finds it sick to the point where he considers them not even normal or human, kind of evil and cold-blooded.

Interpol – Song Seven Lyrics 20 years ago
This has to be one of their best songs, I wish it was on an album so more people would know about it. And I'm sure it's "start again, buttercup" instead of butterfly, though every lyrics site says butterfly. Anyone else agree? Or maybe it's both. Hmmmm.

The Stills – Fevered Lyrics 20 years ago
I suppose it might also be about drug use like heroin or something, to try and get over his heartache. He talks about his heart rate changing and lying down and all that sensual stuff in the verses.

The Stills – Fevered Lyrics 20 years ago
These lyrics are pretty wrong, according to their official site it goes:

Strange like skin
That I believe in
It stretches over bone
And smells like honey on the wind
All so strange
I can't remember
Where the heartache ends
And the fever it begins

Scenes of Mary Magdalene
Who shakes her lover's bones
At all the demons in the window
All so strange
The dreams that haunt my bed
The heart-rate swells
And quickens near the end

And then slows down
It slows down
And I lay down
And I wont try to run

Strange like skin
That I believe in
It leaks out of the phone
And spills like honey
From the window
Warm and strange
I can't remember
How the heartbreak mends
When the fever it remains

And I'm so down
So down
So down
And I lay down
And I wont try to run

I think this song's summed up in the lines:
"I can't remember
Where the heartache ends
And the fever it begins"
and "And I'm so down"
I think the fever he's talking about and what the chorus is all about is depression, and he doesn't know how much of his depression is his heartache for a lost lover or the illness itself. I don't think it's about sex really, more him lying at home on his bed feeling like crap, not recovering from a girlfriend who left him. This fits in with other songs like Still In Love Song.

Various1, why would he write "on the t-hut" just to make it rhyme? "When I see her" fit much better and are obviously correct.

Interpol – The New Lyrics 21 years ago
I love how this song changes without you really noticing. Seems pretty clear it's about a guy who wants to settle down properly with a girl who either wont slow down (into a more serious relationship) or doesn't treat him how he wants (ie maybe he's obsessing over someone who doesn't really respect him or want to be with him), and she's really hurting him. For me the guy comes across as kind of psychotic, like how he wants everything to be perfect and simple and when she starts hurting him and things don't go his way he gets really violent and emotional. I think the lines "You're looking alright tonight, I think we should go" sound abit like he wants to leave (the restaurant or something, due to how he seems to be complimenting her) and take her home and kill her because he can't stand the pain she keeps causing him. Or maybe (while he watches her sleep perhaps: "you're looking alright tonight") he's considering killing her and then himself and they will both "go." Long shot I know but I can't really think of what else the ending means.
This does seem to be an underrated song by Interpol, maybe it's just cause no one wants to post here because the lyrics are relatively simple.

Interpol – Leif Erikson Lyrics 21 years ago
I keep thinking the icebox line is him trying to be less horny by using ice on his crotch, lol kinda random and it doesn't really seem to fit the style of the song but hmmm. Probably more metaphorical than that, like most of your suggestions so far.

The Libertines – The Ha Ha Wall Lyrics 21 years ago
Great song, lyrics are sort of wrong though I think, they're probably:

If you get tired of just hanging around
Pick up a guitar and spin a web full of sound
And then you could be strung out all day
With your lovers and clowns
But now I find myself hanging around

It's been a long war, we're tired and dirty
Still not dirty enough for you my love

I've been thieving, I stole the light from the dawn
But when I come round this'll let you wish you'd never been born
Oh tell me you can see me? Oh can't you see through it all?
I'm empty lost and alone oh won't you heed my call?

It's been a long war, we're so tired and dirty
Still not dirty enough for you ohhh

Oh I'm so tired of hanging around
Ohh pick up a guitar and spin a web full of sounds

So tired of hanging around
Just hanging around
Just hanging around

22-20s – Shoot Your Gun Lyrics 21 years ago
Obviously about some careless/ruthless person, maybe a lover of the narrator. Don't know if the killing/shooting thing is metaphorical or not, I think it's just getting across how she enjoys messing with people and hates people to 'feel alive' and just ruins relationships with anyone who loves her. Great song and lyrics, more people should listen to the 22-20s and post here.

50 Cent – In Da Club Lyrics 21 years ago
Fiddy boasts the capabilities of his language skills by using techniques such as rhyming couplets, alliteration (“shawty said she feeling my style”) and metaphorical references (“rap game in a choke hold,”) which add depth and complexion to the song. Additionally, roughly reciting Bloodhound Gang lyrics (“If the roof on fire, let the mother fucker burn”) shows how he’s not at all uncomfortable with using other artists’ work to add dimension to his own pieces, whilst simultaneously complementing their mastery. This is one of Fiddy's first efforts at confronting his homosexual urges. He talks about "shawty," his pet name for his young sailor sex partner, whom he’d been meeting secretly for several weeks at the time of the writing of the song. The drugs he sings about are poppers, which he often sniffs to help the muscles in his anus relax. This is so that Shawty can slide his penis into Fiddy's tight rectum with little resistance. He comments on a lot of his fellow musicians, showing admiration and respect for them, and hinting more homosexual relations despite his overtly masculine behaviour. It's obvious he didn't have the ability to add in "gay" before "club" in the chorus because of the precise structure of the lyrics, but this loss is balanced with the references at his other homosexual activities, including full body massage (“getting rubbed”) and meaningless sex with male strangers (“I'm into having sex”). Due to his embarrassment over the homosexual issue, he tries to dismiss the accusations to the public by ridiculing fellow homosexuals and referring to one as a "faggot" in a derogatory manner. He shows his casual attitudes to these lyrics by laughing shortly afterwards, but this is just a guise for his genuine object of amusement; his complacency towards sexual encounters with men.
