hmm. the meaning of the song to me is about a girl who is currently seeing a guy, but at the same time talking to a friend of the guy shes seeing. and at the same time the friend is starting to like her in return. sooo.. "Please tell me this means what I think it does -but secretly- so he won't see." - i think he really likes her and wants to know if she likes him too. and that line means that shes sort of leading him on and hinting to him that she likes him, but he wants her to keep it hush from his friend in fear of his friend seeing or finding out that they talk and stuff. "My dear, I fear that your scandal has corrupted many -disrupted many- anyway." - means that her leading the friend on is starting to and may corrupt the friendship he has with his friend (her boyrfriend), and the relationship she has with her boyfriend. "Holding on, though I don't why. Holding on to your lullabye." - this means that hes still talking to her and still likes her even though he knows its wrong because its his friends girlfriend and theyre doing this all behind her boyfriends back. and so he doesnt know why hes still talking to her when he knows it could jeopardize the friendship he has with his friend. "My love is gone, but not for long." - i think this means he stopped talking to her and tried to forget about her but it probably wont happen for long considering how she is. lol. thats my interpretation. its probably wrong haha but its what i see. goooood song btw. |

maybe the girl hes with is a bad influence and isnt a good person and he just wants to get away from her. and sooo... "counting off the days, how could i be so afraid?" sooner or later hes gonna be with her again and so hes just waiting for that day, but really hes afraid of that moment and dreading it because he really doesnt want to see her. "ive been on the run from the dirt you talk about everyone." apparently shes not a good person so thats why he doesnt want to see her anymore. and keeps running away either physically or emotion... or both. "so much nearer my gloom. that much nearer without you." what i understand is that he really loves her and wants it to work out but realizes that shes just no good. soo its a lose/lose situation for him because 1.) hed be sad if he stayed with her and her cruel intentions. and 2.) hed be sad if he left her because he really did love her and would miss her. so either way hed be that much nearer his gloom. "and its so hard to starve..." i think thats the turning point of the song. this is where he finally made his decision. i think he finally left her and now he is starving for what they had and having her with him regardless of how she was. so hes having a hard time living alone without being loved but he knows hes better off... even though it hurts and its hard. oh gosh. idk if that makes any sense to you guys but thats my interpretation. any others? ahh i love these guys. |

yeah. pretty much at first everything seemed so right until he realized their differences in everything, as well as how unfaithful she turned out to be (what good are promises if nobody honors them?). and in the second verse he starts to reflect all the memories they did share when their relationship first started, and then of the things they couldve had if she hadnt deceived him. so he just had to let her go. and tells her not to ask why because its quite obvious why. and he just doesnt want anything to do with her already, even if she still wants him. |
