Purity Ring – Fineshrine Lyrics 12 years ago
This is what I interpreted through the video for this song. The way I hear it, a couple survived a plane crash and are both in a coma, experiencing one another through a telepathic, subconscious connection. The song depicts the woman's deep concern for her partner, even in her comatose state, knowing he's badly hurt, and imagines herself cradling him in her ribcage to have kept him safe, putting his well-being ahead of her own, cushioning his fall into the rocky cliffs and quarry with her own body.

Deep in a coma, her subconscious imagines itself looking after him, caring for him, but when she cuts open the bandage, she finds that he is turning into stone where his injuries were, which represents him healing. Eventually in her telepathic dream he vanishes, leaving only a stone statue of himself behind. In my understanding, at this point he has recovered enough to have slipped out of his coma and is now conscious. She is now experiencing her coma/fantasy alone, and approaches his statue. The statue now begins to cracks at the ribs, reciprocating an offer of safety and protection to her in return. She crawls inside and finds him, and gains the strength to regain consciousness, where he is awake and waiting for her.

To me, this song is about loving someone so deeply that you'd sacrifice yourself to keep them alive and well.

This song and video have blown my mind.

The Notorious B.I.G. – What's the 411? (Remix) Lyrics 17 years ago
You got Mary's verse a little wrong, it goes like this:

Yeah nigga, what makes you better than the next nigga
Seen you last week and your black ass couldn't speak
You try to play like Mr all of that
But now you wanna come to me with some chit-chat
I don't have no time for no wham-bam thank you mam
Gas me up, get me drunk and hit the skins and scram
The same old shit you pulled last week on Pam
I'm not having it, no I'm not having it
You got to do a lot more and that's just how it be
I'm Mary Blige and you just ain't running up in me
I need a man who's looking out with some security
So come correct with some respect, and then we'll see
So if you with it, then drop the 7-digits
And I might just give you a call (Damn)
If you ain't with it then don't waste your time at all
Biggie Smalls, and you don't stop

(Dreams of fuckin an R&B bitch... I'm just playin... but I'm sayin...)

Tool – The Patient Lyrics 17 years ago
My take is that this song tries to envision what force keeps medical practitioners going, after years and years of taking blood (from patients) and giving blood (their dedication towards healing the sick), maintaining the faith even after watching patients die despite their best attempts at saving them. It's a tedious path, that of a surgeon, whose craft often means life or death to the patient on their table. Were it not for the rewards of occasionally getting to witness the loving embraces of family members relieved to know their loved ones will be okay, this song suggests that perhaps the constant stream of death would be too much to bear, and a normal person would have walked away. This song, to me, means that the miracle of saving even one life makes up for the frustration of not being able to save 10 more, and that's the force that keeps a human being from giving up and walking away from such an unpredictable field such as treating terminal illness, where the odds, in most cases, are stacked against you.

Tool – The Grudge Lyrics 17 years ago
My hunch is that this song is a commentary on the almost-religious dogmatic beliefs that surround the country's attitude towards sports. Teams and their fans hold rabid grudges against one another, and they are obsessed with studying and memorizing the other teams' playbook and anticipating their next move, as if the outcome is within their control. It's about our obsession with championship over something as trivial as a sport that 99% of us are only spectators to anyway, yet people live and die by the teams they hold dear. Pretty ridiculous, if you ask me.

Faith No More made a similar commentary in their song A Small Victory, but theirs was a little more straighforward. Tool has a tendency to make metaphysical analogies, and the whole Saturn thing is an analogy for What side of the orbit do you fall on? Are you one of us, or one of them? You must choose, and carry the torch of our grudge against the other guy.

Death Cab for Cutie – Marching Bands of Manhattan Lyrics 20 years ago
I think the song is a reminder to a friend/loved-one going through some depression that there's a world around them that they're blind to and missing out on while in that state of mind. The person has isolated him or herself while dealing with his grief, and the lyrics express the singer's wish to bring the mountain to mohammed, so to speak.

Death Cab for Cutie – Information Travels Faster Lyrics 21 years ago
It took me several listens to wrap my head around these lyrics. I'm still not sure I've got it, but here goes.

This song addresses the sense of feeling like you're in a fishbowl after a breakup, when all kinds of 3rd parties gossip and discuss your personal affairs like it was any of their business in the first place. And all the while, you just want to put the whole relationship to rest and not deal with any of the formalities of 'staying friends' or preserving your reputation amongst your ex's circle of friends.

"you're in debt and completely fooled, that you can look into the mirror and objectively rank your wounds.
sewing circles are not solely based in trades of cloth: there's spinsters all around here taking notes, reporting on us."

This is so heartbreakingly true. Debt is not to be taken literally here. The loss can refer to parting ways with someone you once loved, or even the time invested into the relationship that failed. You think you can objectively evaluate the extent of your losses, but don't even realize that theres a force out there complicating things even further: the "spinsters", or the rumor mill, everyone out there gossiping about your split, taking sides and casting judgement. Information travels so fast sometimes that you're helpless in even defending your own position. And the person with whom you've just split wants to remain friendly, but all you want to do is forget about this whole awful mess and move on.

Death Cab for Cutie – President of What? Lyrics 21 years ago
I can't believe nobody detects any of the political hostility in this song. The title should be a dead giveaway.

"I saw the scene unfold on a rainy Sunday
Creases indicating fold that kept four walls from caving in" - The song begins with a vision of scenes of current events that lead to a premonition of the shit soon hitting the fan. The folds that keep four walls from caving in are (i think) an analogy to the highly disputed trussles in the world trade center towers that buckled and caused the entire structures to collapse. Ben's analogy is that current events will cause the country to soon do the same.

"I took a little more of what i take for granted
And filled my plate with fear that gears would turn
And wheels would roll away" - We are trained to take for granted that we are to have faith in our Fearless Leader in the time of crisis, but as it turned out, ours kept us distracted with fear while his main concern was an agenda that rapidly rolled out of even his control.

"Something's got to break you down" - Self-explanatory.

"Entered the scene (i'm told) on i think it was Monday / You drove straight through and mined that quarry / For all it could bleed 'til dry " - So now we took forceful action against our perpetrators... anyone wanna go out on a limb with me and suspect what was bled 'til dry were oil wells??

"I took a little more 'til i got taken for granted / 'cause beautiful boys gave chase / and when they arch your backbone / it's such a dreadful sight" - This line breaks my heart because it accurately sums up how manipulated I felt too. You put all your faith into your leader only to discover that everything all revolved around a lie, while beautiful boys, our military who are so young and have their whole lives ahead of them, are deployed to their deaths in defense of what turned out to be nothing at all but self-serving interests. The picture is so vivid: an 18 yr old soldier who enlisted just to get help with college finds himself in Iraq running from an indistinguishable enemy only to have his dreams cut short by a bullet to the back. Dreadful sight indeed.

"i'll react when faces find you
with jealous fits that gag and bind you
'cause nothing hurts like nothing at all
when imagination takes full control" - This is the ultimate wish for revenge, one that a citizen himself can never dish out but only wait and hope that the lies of our President will be discovered and that he is dealt swift justice worthly of what we would do if only we could get our own hands on him. Because the worst offense against the people that support you is abusing the power they gave you over something that was only a figment of your own imagination.

That's the picture that this entire song illustrates for me.

The Shins – Mine's Not A High Horse Lyrics 21 years ago
I see this as a rebuttal to having been spurned by a sanctimonious former-loved-one (and her entire circle) after an unrecoverable altercation, one which he was never even given the chance to defend himself or his position against. Here he's pointing out that she herself isn't the picture of perfect morality, "Will I watch your convictions melt like ice cubes in an ocean? You were so poorly cast as a malcontent..." and further acknowledges that having ended up in show bizness, he was bound to be surrounded by temptation that would inevitably prove too powerful to resist. The ancient boat is the Ark-like vehicle intended to spare the righteous from the flooding of the sinners, but doesn't necessarily insulate the passengers from the evils right outside. Even if they had been able to foresee trouble, they wouldn't have been able to prevent it as long as 'swimming in the muddy waters' was the nature of his breadwinning. The bottom line is that she knew what she was getting into when she got involved with him, and therefore is in no position to condemn him to the extent that she did. Clearly she enjoyed the benefits of his rising stardom, and could have been more understanding in the face of hardships.

It's about giving someone the benefit of the doubt, having a presumed mutual respect and talking to them as if they too were as smart or insightful as you are, and learning that they're just shallow and closed-minded, and not even worthy of your company.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps Lyrics 21 years ago
Karen O was dating the lead singer of the Liars when YYY made it big and started touring. Basically it's a song in which the singer reminds her soon-to-be travelling lover that the road will lead him to many places, but to always remember where true love lies on his map. In the song, the roles are reversed, because it was actually Karen O who was going on tour, but it's a reflection of the same sentiment anyway.

Incubus – A Certain Shade of Green Lyrics 21 years ago
To me, a certain shade of green uses a plant's photosynthesis as a metaphor for our own lives. Plants don't procrastinate, they sprout, grow leaves, reach a certain shade of green (aka maturity), and then die. This song is about humans being the only species to have the option of clinging to their immaturity way into adulthood. Any other species follows the pattern that their life cycle dictates for them. Essentially, Brandon is calling out all of those that are old enough to take responsibility for their own lives but simply choose not to, clinging to childish ways rather than growing up.
