I dunno that the line 'doesn't bring you back' necessarily has to refer to literaly getting someone back to him, but it could also be seen the terms of bringing yourself back, back to a place or time before the mistakes you made. But we see in the line "wrong, cant be undone" he's finding little consolation in the reality that mistakes cannot be undone. Especially big ones. We can't go back and relive anything with the knowledge we have in the present, even if we all wish we could. As for the course and the comparisons he outlines for us (ie; tears on a river, push on a shove) I think it's pretty obvious in outlining the idea of too little too late. Something like tears, when put in contrast to an entire river, are small and inconsequential. Like many of our actions day to day. |

I kinda figured that it was about some kind of relationship in which either of the two involved, be they whomever you want, are walking dangerous ground to be with one another. That their relationship is jeopardized because their being together is something many people, or at least those around them, look down upon or do not agree with, making their situation a 'delicate one', in that toes could be stepped upon because of this couple. Could be a same sex couple, or maybe a bi-racial couple. Almost parallel to a Romeo & Juliet situation, where they want to be together but no one else in there lives see fit to it, and finally one of them ends it, much to the dismay of the other, who clearly wanted to keep trying for what they may have had. |

What I got from this was that it was about a guy who is, aside from being relatively self involved, trying particularly hard to make himself a more 'out there' and unique person then he feels he is, thus 'building a mystery'. Trying to create himself as a more charming and mysterious person. It also sounds to me as though the song writer (sarah in this case) can see through him like a window, as well as she can see that what he's doing in living this facade is more dangerous to himself than he sees. Thats just what i thought anyway... |
