The Smiths – How Soon Is Now? Lyrics 20 years ago
i'm pretty sure it's meant perjoratively. i get the sense that these lines are something of an internal monologue, that reticent men who are not driven by their pursuit of women would say to themsevles inside, when considering others.

in the setting of a club, it's the idea of many macho men strutting around trying to nail some girl, whilst also thinking how the narrator isn't doing what he should to emulate them, and thus achieve love by getting some random girl. but the narrator doesn't want to emulate them, thus: you shut your mouth! how can *you* say, *i* go about things the wrong way?

the 'you' and the 'i' highlight the disparity in the situation itself.

Blur – Parklife Lyrics 20 years ago
brewers droop is when, after courting a lady in your drinking establishment, you wish to take her home. Now, when the time comes for you to introduce her to your little General it, unfortunately, does not want to stand to attention. Thus, brewers droop is your little solider remaing flaccid, rather than turgid.

Elliott Smith – Punch and Judy Lyrics 21 years ago
A Punch and Judy show is a traditional British puppet show (although I hear that the story was origianlly italian?). Punch often argues with his wife and, very satirically, hits his wife with a bat when the argument gets heated. a policeman gets involved and he and punch tend to fight too. i also remember a crocodile appearing with stolen sausages in his mouth, but i don't remember why. i haven't seena punch and judy show in a long time.

Cursive – Pulse Lyrics 21 years ago
this song is *another* song referencing what i think to is tim's refutation of catholicism. the reference to 'second communion' is, i think, a reference to an important moment in his life, perhaps when he began to realise something (see 'vermont' - brought up by holy ghosts and saints).

Cursive – Vermont Lyrics 21 years ago
i think this is another song showing tim's refutation of his catholicism. what with the reference to 'holy ghosts and saints' and the progression from "schoolboy" beliefs to adulthood; he cannot find answers to all those 'grown-up' questions. Religion seems to be a prevalent theme, what with references in songs such as Pulse, and many others, too.
