I interpret the "hanging from a shelf" line as in it breaks his heart to see her 'up for grabs', so to speak, instead of with him, as in she is on display in a store or something. He can't stand to think of her in love with someone else so obviously he doesn't like the idea of other guys thinking about having a relationship with her. Since she won't go out with him, she is technically 'on disply' or 'back on the market' or whatever the phrase is. It has NOTHING to do with suicide or hanging somebody. |

The Mersey is a river in England that runs near Manchester (the Roses home town) among other places. This song sounds slightly suicidal, possibly because of a girl ("she doesn't care about my despair") but then again it could be for any number of reasons. Maybe its a reflection of times as a kid when the world seemd to want to drag you down. |

Whether it was Lennon's intention or not this song, to me, is about having your heart broken and not knowing what to do 'cos you're still in love. In that respect, there is no song i can think of that does a better job of conveying that feeling than this one. |
