Whenever I hear this song, for some reason it just reminds of the Evangelion story. It's the whole idea about the end of the world and how even if the whole world is destroyed and humanity wiped out completely, two remain. These two are the last hope, and the ability to create a new civilization, one perfect and immune from the spoils of humanity. Really gives a twist on the old Revelations/Genesis stories. On a completely unrelated note, Genesis are are very good band. |

To me it sounds like a story about the man's father who represses the truth about his drinking habits, telling tall tales about a fantasy life of his, and eventually takes his frustration out on his children. Afterwards, he blames it in the children. Most I can get out of it... VERY good song though, definitely a "sleeper" hit. |

This song, as its name implies, has very complicated metaphorical values that are hidden beneath the visage of the very simple song. First of all, she references to the changes within the economy which led to a consolidation of certain individuals who still remain high in the hierarchy as of today. Due to this consolidation, the difference between the proleteriat class and the bourgeoisie, practically eliminating the middle class values that the world was born on. As of now, 2% of the population now owns 79% of the total wealth. In fact, the "employer class" tricks the workers into a false state of security, which can be seen in the lyrics, Chill out, What you yellin' for? Lay back, it's all been done before However, the "working class" has no current understanding of these numbers and are therefore losing money without any knowledge. This can be seen in the lyrics, "Why do you have to go and make things so complicated?" And finally, when the proleteriats respond to this threat of loss of wealth, they are captured, per-say, by the employers and once again forced down to their already lower levels. This can be shown in the lyrics, "You're watchin' your back Like you can't relax
You're tryin' to be cool. You look like a fool to me". To those who once again fall back into their abodes, the continually battling workers, disraught over the loss of their comrades' mob mentality, say "Honesty Promise me I'm never gonna find you fake it". Whew...complicated! |
