NOFX – The Decline Lyrics 18 years ago
God. If I have to hear that NOFX are "true punks" or that this is a "musical masterpiece" one more time, I don't know what I'll do. It's too bad not more than one or two of anyone who has even read this thread has a genuine concept of what "punk" or better yet, "anarchy" really is. And about the musical masterpiece thing. God. Much better music has been made in history, but no one will ever know about it because it's less mainstream than NOFX(I don't know when NOFX became unmainstream, they are very mainstream thanks to so many of their fans being fake punks who think mohawks and band patches on leather jackets will stop the government)

Fall Out Boy – Sugar, We're Goin Down Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is such a piece of shit. I don't mind Fall Out Boy, but, the music is garbage. This chord progression is so overused, but of course, most of the youngster fanbase who don't understand music or guitar won't find any meaning in that. This song has cool lyrics though. I just wish it wasn't so musically simple.

Ryan Adams – So Alive Lyrics 18 years ago
I've always dug this tune, but lately this song has taken on a different meaning and become really powerful to me because it's totally the way I feel about Jesus and my relationship with Him. This just sums that feeling up perfectly

Bruce Springsteen – My Hometown Lyrics 18 years ago
Viper, "Born To Run" wouldn't be a continuation of this song because it was recorded way before this.

As for this song itself, well, it may or may not be intended as a story of pride in the narrator's hometown but personally, I perceive what is said in the lyrics as being a story told in ironic statements, something Springsteen has a knack for. He talks of the decline in the state of his town and when he says "This is your hometown" I feel like he's being sarcastic as if to exemplify how pathetic he feels his town has become. As I said, this may or may not be the intended meaning but this is what the song means to me because I relate it to the way I feel about my own hometown.

The Appleseed Cast – Innocent Vigilant Ordinary Lyrics 19 years ago
Beautiful song, Two Conversations is a step-down from previous Appleseed works but by no means a bad album at all. I only have a couple of small nitpicked gripes with it, nothing that detracts too much from the beauty. Firstly, I know they decided to put vocals more up front, and that's fine, but the lyrics...I just don't think Appleseed Cast are the kind of band that really do well by riding on the weight of lyrics. Their musicianship and the way everything blends has always been their greatest talent, and the way they always used simple and sincere lyrics as just a way to make the songs feel complete worked well for them. However, songs like this and others on Two Conversations have too much of that simple sincere lyrical body and when they overdo it, I feel it gets a little redundant. The second gripe is the drumming.....it's good, and I haven't heard Casket Lottery but the new guy is definitely no Cobra. He just doesn't offer the drumming that was unique to this band.

As I said, those were out of sheer nitpicking. Two Conversations is an awesome album that is underappreciated by many AC fans.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps Lyrics 19 years ago
People are saying it's WAY different than the rest of the album but I didn't find that. Sure, songs like Date With The Night and Black Tongue are more representative of a good chunk, but I find Maps has similar aesthetic value to songs like Modern Romance and Y Control.

Slayer are ten times better than Pantera, though.

Also, even today, Cannibal Corpse's contemparies kick their ass. Nile could own these guys in a second. Hell, even My Dying Bride is better than this bull.

Simple Plan – Welcome to My Life Lyrics 19 years ago
Your best friend has no life.

Music is a powerful thing, and yes, we do need something in our lives. Just because a song doesn't bluntly come out like Simple Plan songs and say "I'm broken, I'm hurt, my life sucks" doesn't mean you can't relate. Dashboard Confessional songs are pretty cliche too, but they are written a lot better and intelligently than Simple Plan Songs. Or, take a song like "Apathy Is A Cold Body" by Poison The Well. If I'm "down in the dumps" and need something to be in my life at that time, a song written like that does more than a shitty manufactured Simple Plan song ever will.

The reason I can't stand Simple Plan isn't because they write songs that are meant to appeal to troubled teenagers. There's nothing wrong with having some songs you can relate to. It's just that Simple Plan do it so poorly, because there's no creativity or musical genius involved.

Poison the Well – Crystal Lake Lyrics 19 years ago
I detected the Friday the 13th reference as soon as I saw the title...I'm a diehard slasher film fan.

To the guy who said "they should make more awesome songs like Nerdy".....get off the Opposite Of December bandwagon you motherfuckers. A song like Apathy Is A Cold Body is ten times better than Nerdy.

Poison the Well – Nerdy Lyrics 19 years ago
A classic, but certainly not their best as it's cracked up to be. In fact, the entire album Opposite of December is a work of art but it's definitely overrated, in my opinion. I would have to say that You Come Before You is their strongest effort to date, and also, Apathy Is A Cold Body easily gives any track off Opposite a run for its money.

Poison the Well – Apathy Is A Cold Body Lyrics 19 years ago
To the zim guy....Slipknot SUCK. Poison The Well own the shit out of them in a million ways.

As for this song...I don't really have much to say that hasn't already been said. I agree that this song seems to be about self-analysis and reflection on one's own life or situation.

Also, I just have to say right now, no way in hell does Opposite Of December compare to this. First of all, both albums are completely different. Second of all, OoD is WAY over-rated and this song is 10 times what Nerdy will ever be. Especially because of the time I was in when I heard this, and my connection with it and all, it's one of the only songs that has ever brought me to physical tears. The playing is just so key to the haunting beauty of this song, and the vocals just absolutely destroy me. I've never heard lyrics sung so painfully honest like this before. Easily the number one reason to buy You Come Before You. It's very different from their other stuff, but overall I'd have to say it's their masterpiece. It is actually hard to sit down and adhesively listen to it sometimes, just because it's extremely brooding and has this effect over you, especially if you're as intense as I am.

Brand New – Moshi Moshi Lyrics 19 years ago
Is it just me, or does this song seem sort of like Brand New's way of giving a nod to Weezer? Maybe it's just coincidence, but I mean just look at all the obvious points. The tune and the way it resembles something Weezer would do(the song's tune kinda reminds me of Suzanne), the references to Japanese girls, the cheesy yet clever lyrics.

That's true neologik. I'm not anti-Metallica at all, I'm just saying that I can't stand the way people are claiming to be hardcore Metallica fans and praising them blindly. Like how people think this song is "genius" or something.

Metallica have some fucking great tunes though. This being one of them. Along with Fuel, Sad But True, Master of Puppets....well, it'd take way too long to name all the good songs, because there's a lot. It seems the cool thing to do on the Metallica bandwagon these days is hate all their newer stuff and call them sell-outs...well, I wouldn't buy the albums, but there are still some good tunes off Load, Reload, St. Anger, etc.

It's funny how a lot of you are all "ooh...look at me, I listen to Metallica I'm so anti-MTV, etc. etc."

Listening to Metallica is not being anti-conformist. A lot of people listen to Metallica that are nothing but conformists. Not saying all Metallica fans are, but a lot of people are jumping on the classic rock/metal bandwagon.

You people talk about this band and this song as if these lyrics take so much intelligence and effort to write. I have seriously wrote more intelligent and meaningful songs in, like, 15 minutes.

From First to Last – Featuring Some Of Your Favorite Words Lyrics 19 years ago
I am not a scenester at all, and I could care less if bands are mainstream or not. Hell, my two favourite bands of all-time are Jimmy Eat World and Korn.

From First To Last are nothing special apart from other bands in the same grouping, that is true. As for Taking Back Sunday.....Tell All Your Friends was a kick-ass album, and I don't know why people hated it so much, but Where You Want To Be was a close second. My only gripe with TBS is that it's like they rely so heavily on the heartbreak lyrics and such. On Where You Want To Be, the music was still good but it just lacked the excitement or freshness of Tell All Your Friends, and the loss of John Nolan clearly plays a major role in this because everything I loved about the lyrics on TAYF shows in the work of Straylight Run. Of course, don't think I'm one of those people that thinks John Nolan made TBS. That is definitely not true. Fred is also a great guitarist and songs like "New American Classic" and "...Slowdance On The Inside" show that there is still a breath of life in the Taking Back Sunday machine. Only thing is, I think that breath may have been the last. If my 'Rule of 3' emo theory is true, then bands like TBS and The Used just won't quite cut it with their third albums. The debuts are always amazing, but too often, bands make the mistake of relying on the same formulas and lyrics and they start to become a shadow of themselves with each passing album. Bands like Thursday, Jimmy Eat World, and My Chemical Romance on the other hand, show improvement and growth on each album and that's what separates them from the rest of the scene. Oh, and not to mention, Brand New. Oh my god. Jesse Lacey is my hero. Deja Entendu is a masterpiece.

This is just my opinion though. And I can't stress enough that I'm not some stupid scenester. The last 5 CDs I listened to weren't emo in fact. Well, wait. From Autumn To Ashes could be in there I guess. Nevermind, I'm ranting. I don't want to make war, btw, I'm just explaining myself so I don't look like some punk kid who thinks it's cool to be "indie" or "underground".

I'm 15, and I have to say, this song is fucking amazing. Not only is it a good song on it's own, but the memories and feelings I have attached to this song just make it that much more awesome. With this song, I find that you can just completely get taken away from reality and sit there with a clear mind and just concentrate on the music. Dire Straits are way underappreciated in the new generation media(thank God there's more people my age here who appreciate this music!). I mean, forget Angus Young and Slash and Van Halen....sure, hair metal is great but Mark Knopfler is AMAZING!

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 19 years ago
St. Jimmy IS Jesus of Suburbia though, and only "died" metaphorically. In other words, he gave up on warring against the system via sex, drugs, etc. Basically, by the end of the album, he realizes that either way he went he was wrong and that he was never truly able to find a way out of the machine whether he gave in to it or tried to lash out against it. Also, in a way, it kind of ended up that in this fighting against the machine, the real war being fought was against himself. That's kind of what the real war is for most of us.

From First to Last – Featuring Some Of Your Favorite Words Lyrics 19 years ago
The above explanation could be true, but I personally gather a hint of sarcasm from these lyrics, as if the narrator is stating how difficult it is to write lyrics but actually poking fun at how easy it is to come up with some random fake and contrived emo lyrics. The first verse kind of says it all:

Words don't seem to come so easy
when I need them oh so badly
Here's to playing tug of war with my vocal chords
Maybe I can give this another
shot or sing about a broken
heart, or immitate the way it feels
if this was happening for real

Just in those words, it's almost as if he's saying "Shit, I can't think of something decent, original and thought-provoking, looks like I'll have to pull a Taking Back Sunday."
