10,000 Maniacs – Gun Shy Lyrics 21 years ago
First of all, I love this song... but the version on Natalie Merchant's "Live in Concert" CD is better. Second, I live in a military town, and I know a lot of soldiers, and this song is so, so true. Give it a listen.

This is like the biography of every fatherless girl. I wish I could sit down every parent of girls and play this song.

A simple, sexy, seductive song. This song makes me think of satin sheets and summer nights.

Norah Jones – Humble Me Lyrics 21 years ago
I cannot believe that no one has commented on this beautiful, simple song. It is about a single mother who has no one to turn to. She is at rock bottom, and she is humbled.

Listen to this on a summer night- and dance barefoot. It's awesome.

Counting Crows – Rain King Lyrics 21 years ago
It's about wanting to be something more than you are (in the service of the queen) and searching for something to fulfill you. And wanting to not be so lonely.

10,000 Maniacs – Dust Bowl Lyrics 21 years ago
The best version of this song is by Natalie live in concert. The first verse is from the point of view of a single mother in modern times. The second verse is told by a single mother in the Dust Bowl era in the 1930s, and the third verse represents the hopes of poor people from all eras. It's about cyclical poverty and the strength of those who live amid it.

The Wallflowers – Invisible City Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is about being disillusioned in life and running around and around only to find out that you're just chasing yourself. BTW- Note the line, "all these horses that you chase around..." In the song, Feels Like Summer Again, it says, "I buried my horse in a shallow grave, then I said a few things. I had champagne. That beast gave me everything that nobody gave." So, in the end, the speaker learns to come to terms with his problems and find true meaning in life.
