Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics 19 years ago
haha imacleigh "He didnt use heavy drugs Untill the year he toured after figure 8" he was on crack and smack long before then. Where did you get that from? Years ago, I remember it being patently obvious. To be honest, it was one of the attractions of the guy.

This is a silly debate. Elliott was hooked on drugs on and off from an early point in his life. But besides that, the lyrics in this song are so clear that there should be no question. It's not just about drugs, but - as with many of his songs - drugs and their paraphenalia and language make for some pretty powerful and beautiful lyrics.

What does this song mean to you?

-that she's a dirty little mare, and that I wouldn't mind oiling her.

Er... sorry... I meant to add that comment to the version I entered. But it was already there.

I cribbed this from www.rtxarchive.com, but I'm sure it's cool.

The Silver Jews – How Can I Love You? (If You Won't Lie Down) Lyrics 19 years ago
These lyrics are great. Simple, to the point and witty. What's all this "even by indiepop standards" crap? What the hell is indiepop anyhow? You need to work out an argument and back it up with something more than a badly-formed opinion.

Yeah defintely! I think it's about pills ("My little sister's eyes so wide...").

Must be one of my songs of the year!!

The Shins – Know Your Onion! Lyrics 20 years ago
Yes this is a great song. But Greyshoes: it ain't true that the Beatles are a universal reference point. You could well say that the Rolling Stones influenced rock more then them.

I like the masturbation idea... the lyrics certainly hint at onanism, when you're thinking about it. hmmmm.

David Bowie – China Girl Lyrics 21 years ago
I think it was co-written with Iggy Pop.
Again, this is very likely a reference to drug addiction. China is a nickname for heroin - during the 1800s China was the main source for opium. If you re-read the lyrics with this in mind, the excitement, triumphalism and despair of addiction suddenly leap off the page at you.
It's not about having a Chinese girfriend.

Elliott Smith – Bled White Lyrics 21 years ago
For what it's worth, White City is a station on the London underground. But it's on the red (central) line. I always think this song has something of Baby Britain about it, so there you go.

Elliott Smith – Angeles Lyrics 21 years ago
replicant212 -- it's a clever line that leaves you thinking. Like all good writers (and like in many of his songs), Elliott manages here to give us a song with many different interpretations - the whole thing can be read in different ways. Without sounding too arsey, the late Jacques Derrida would say that it doesn't matter what the original intention of the song was. It's a lovely, lovely song.

David Bowie – Ashes to Ashes Lyrics 21 years ago
no it's definitely drugs: "time and again I tell myself / I'll stay clean tonight" and so on. I think this song is beautiful, in a devastating sort of way. Anyone with any understanding of addiction must understand the feelings behind his words in this song. Sad and lovely.
