I think this song is about running away from your problems and deep down inside knowing that you should have actually stayed and faced them and knowing that the conflict would have made you a stronger and better person .. "To face the ones I've left behind. Portrait of a man who stayed. His face is folded up and grayed. But there's something in his eyes that tells me this is the life for me. I also know that Geoff ran away from home when he was 16.. so maybe it's about that and the "you" DOES talk about his parents(thanks ChemThurs) .. |

| Geoff said in an interview that this song is about people losing faith and basically just going to church because that's what they're supposed to do and kind of losing themselves and their own voice because they're caught up in other's beliefs.. (wake up in an outline and try to speak with the shattered voice of the lives we lead) .. it's basically about the way conformed religion detiorates faith. | |

| ACTUALLY.. geoff made it all clear in an interview.. This song is when he got in a fist fight with one of his friends.. then he went on vacation before they made up.. while he was on vacation his friend and another kid were playing with a gun and it went off and killed the kid he got in the fist fight with. They used to play in the kid's attic and geoff said that for years he would have dreams of him running downstairs(steps ascending) from the attic and trying to save his friend. | |

This song is indeed about the death of Ian Curtis. But Joy Division's music had a huge impact on Thursday(at least Geoff).. so he's talking about when he and his friends found out that Ian Curtis died and them all sitting around trying to understand and simply digest everything that happened and the death of someone so important to them. *Like what we would probably do if Geoff killed himself.. CRY and be completely dumbfounded!* |
