| damn bible bangers. bazan is a christian, but as of the last concert (last week) really doesn't like being associated with christian music bc not EVERYTHING goes back to the damn bible, he has a relationship with god, but as he put it at the concert as people started asking the inane "does this relate to the book of ecclesiates?" and other crap...."I'd much rather just hang out with normal people". and he's NOT a Bush supporter. stupid bible bangers. he's eons ahead of any of you. | |

Okay I read through most of these comments and no one seemed to grasp the meaning I received the first time I heard this song. The lines "I find kind of funny...are the best I've ever had" could be in reference to the dreams in which he's dying are the one's that evoke emotion from him, making them the best he's ever had. which would go along with the title, mad world - crazy that sad things are what make you happy because they make you feel. he also talks about children and their birthday parties, well often times it's easier for children feel emotions, and happiness is a lot easier when you're younger; everything's magnified the first time you experience it, and a lot of the time when you try to recreate it, it's just not as good. the lines "i find it hard to tell you, i find it hard to take" also go along with my first concept, it's definitely hard to describe that emotion, and odd (at first) to experience happiness from sadness. "All around me are familiar faces Worn out places, worn out faces Bright and early for their daily races Going nowhere, going nowhere And their tears are filling up their glasses No expression, no expression " everyone's looking for the same thing (happiness), and are getting discouraged, but he's found something to make him happy, and no one else understands it i could be wrong, there's a lot of evidence to support that he's just depressed and would like to die, but I like mine better :) |

| hey "shewy", everyone makes their own decisions about how they choose to interpret songs (duh), but the author always has their own intention and reason for writing the song, which, I think, is what we're trying to figure out. the two lines you picked out are both evidence that very strongly support that the song is about a dead beat dad. also, "I'll have to wait to get the best of you" supports that a lot of times after children get older and realize what their parents have gone through, it helps to build relationships through understanding. | |

| it's "I can't get used to this lifestyle" the very last line, that is. I saw guster play this at bonnaroo this summer and also in cleveland, and I love it. I think this song is kind of a devolution and the person just doesn't want to adapt. oh, and it's a talking heads cover. | |
