Red Hot Chili Peppers – Midnight Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't know if this is the exact reference, but it's interesting that Anthony Kiedis (singer) and Chad Smith (drummer) are both Scorpios (Zodiac sign).

311 – Electricity Lyrics 17 years ago
right, ate 16 am. also the lyric
"a call out for unity
in every province and city
what do you think we've been saying
since we first started playing"

refers to the song "Unity" as well, which is one of their earliest songs. It's good that 311 still stand by their beliefs they had when they started the band.

The Black Eyed Peas – My Humps Lyrics 19 years ago
the lyrics contradict each other. the girl is saying how sexy and curvy she is, and she attracts all the guys. she wants to seduce the guys and get them to spend all their time and money on her, but when they want to do something with her (dance, touch her etc.) she backs off and says she doesn't want any drama. why seduce the guys and turn them on when you don't want them to even touch you? what a tease. and there's girls like this in real life, too. I guess that's women for you.

311 – Other Side Of Things Lyrics 19 years ago
both of you are correct, in my opinion. parts of this song talk about optimism, and parts of it also talk about the lack of education or value of it in today's society. alot of 311 songs can have 2 major meanings. I believe the reason for that is Nick and SA can each say different things or have different perspectives on the same idea.

You can always make up an excuse, but it never solves anything. You need to solve the problems yourself.

311 – Galaxy Lyrics 20 years ago
Shredder dont diss man. since day one, SA has always had out there lyrics. Consider also that this song is off of Transistor, 311's most obscure and experimental album to date. Call it a poetic license. SA's sci-fi poetry is just him being creative, which is a really neat 311 element to alot of their fans. I don't think SA believes the content of this song any more than the people who wrote LOTR or Star Wars believe in talking goblins, elves, wookies, lightsabers, or the force. That being said, the reference "burnin fossil fuels, we dont even need to" probably is taken from an actual belief in eastern religions that one can meditate and harness their life energy (chi) instead of using earthly resources for energy. As far as "the gap for another planet" , there IS a huge asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, who knows where it came from. It's a neat hypothesis by SA even though it might sound a little silly.

311 – Don't Tread On ME Lyrics 20 years ago
Nick's rapping skills entertain me, so much I rap along with him in the songs. The differences between the demo and the final version are these: 1) No SA, in SA's parts its just instruments 2) instead of "oh theres a clock in my head" in the bridge Nick raps "DON'T TREAD ON ME! You caught me in a state of volatility...." or something...can someone post the demo version lyrics? Personally I think the rap goes way better with the bouncy hip-hop-rock beat than just normal singing like in the final version.

311 – Do You Right Lyrics 21 years ago
Lyrically it's a feelgood song. I don't know if it's about sex, drugs, or rock'n'roll, but I do know that Nick seems to love his life. Musically, the song has a Latin feel, which makes you wanna dance.

The Black Eyed Peas – B.E.P. Empire Lyrics 21 years ago
In "Empire" the Black Eyed Peas rap about what they think hip-hop music should be like, as opposed to what it is now, while rock band 311 provides the backing instruments. Very nice song.

311 – Cali Soca Lyrics 21 years ago
"Cali Soca" , like "Blizza", is a very good instrumental from the Soundsystem demos, only this time they experiment with the Latin/Tropical sound that is present on the rest of the album.

311 – Blizza Lyrics 21 years ago
"Blizza" is a funky little instrumental keyboard jam from their Soundsystem demos. I love this song! No real lyrics here, but there is SA playing a sample from their previous album Transistor. Isn't it kind of funny that SA sampled from other people on Transistor and sampled from Transistor on Soundsystem? Hehe.

ugh, I wrote my lyric interpretations too long. Lyrically, 311 explains how they write songs and why they do it. Musically speaking, it's a funky rap/rock song.

Omaha Stylee best describes 311's music. Most people wouldn't think that music like this would come from Nebraska.

311 – We Do It Like This Lyrics 21 years ago
Basically self-explanatory, its one of their many awesome egotistical songs on From Chaos about their band and unmatched sound, in which they brag abou their band. But its not that prefabricated shit you find in bands like Limpbizkit. These guys can actually back up their words with their mad skills, which come naturally. They have a hell of alot more talent than most of those shallow bands. this song is one of the many songs they made to talk about how much of a KICK ASS band they are, and how to make music the right way, by having fun, being original, and doing your best, not that angst bullshit radio rock like that lame ass (c)rap-rock Linkin Park. In the bridge it talks about racing against the clock as you record songs in the studio (A battle against time to make use of your minds...), yet still using your mind, and giving it all you've got to make kick ass music (to make the best use of our strings and things
all cylinders go motherfucker we ring ). 311 knows how to make good music, and they "do it like this".

311 – Galaxy Lyrics 21 years ago
the first verse and chorus talk about how fucked up this world is, but to me the second and third verses talk about meditation and breath techniques or something. Didn't SA have an out of body experience before? this song might be about it

311 – First Straw Lyrics 21 years ago
I love this song! The name "First Straw" caught my attention ever since I saw it on 311's site. This is the meaning I get from it: You know how there is that phrase "that's the last straw!" Well this song is about a dating relationship between a guy and his girlfriend. Too often we don't resolve relationship problems when they first arise, we wait until the problem becomes so big that we cant take it anymore and then we say "that's the last straw that broke my back" and we explode with anger and ruin a good relationship and then break up. In this song, Nick and SA explain a better way to handle problems in a dating relationship. They say to watch out for the "First Straw", or the first little problem that arises, and resolve it while it's still small, rather than let it become a bigger problem. That is what keeps a perfectly good loving relationship from going wrong, and I would agree with Hexum that there is no reason for getting to the last straw stage at all. I would quote some of the lyrics, but the lyrics and song imagery are pretty self-explanatory. This song is so deep, yet so simple...and absolutely beautiful! 311 keeps adding to the list of their awesome reggae love songs along with "Purpose","Amber", "Give Me A Call", their Cure Cover, and "First Straw" is yet another memorable one! Musically and lyrically, 311 is the most original band I have ever liked and they are my fav! Reggae On 311!...errr I mean...Rock on 311! LOL j/k
