i do not understand this song. from what im thinking, a boy is apologizing to his friend, the friend must have confided in him and told him one of his fears. since the boy said he walked away trying not to cry in front of the brother, maybe the brother abuses the other boy. "he knows where I live, he's not interested" maybe that is just the boy reassuring himself in his head that hes OK. he cant have a good friendship (nice thing) because he left when his friend needed him the most. they're parting, but he needs one last memory of what he could have had. can someone else please comment on this song?

to me, "watching her twin want to die" means that she is looking at herself in the mirror and can see what a wreck she is. in the second or third chorus, you can hear him say "i'm gonna cut my wrist / when will i be going home?" also, more instruments come in after that chorus and i feel adds to the whole "being overwhelmed" idea of the song. feeling like you dont know your own body and longing for the feeling that you have an exit to a situation are all parts of anxiety. this song is simply beautiful and is definitely one of my favorites.

i'm not sure what this song is supposed to be about...but i feel like its about a man who is playing with his daughter, and since she is still innocent in her childhood, she doesnt understand that although they are laughing together and having a good time, he isnt such a great dad. he pretends to call up his daughters teacher in front of her, just so he looks like a good parent, and so she thinks he is involved. although they dont always get along, he carries a picture of her inside his jacket. now im not sure about this part, but i think that since anne doesnt recognize the person in the picture as herself, it may be a picture of someone that he sees her as, maybe someone he wants her to be? she doesnt care, and regardless of his feelings, doesnt want to spend time with him anymore..and he knows that, and feels indifferent about it.

to me, jamie begins to address (in a way) his view of the war. about halfway through the song, he seems to get more personal, as if he is targeting this song to one specific person. perhaps he knew a boy in high school who only did things for recognition, and now, in jamies eyes, he enlisted for the same reason. a few magazines have said that the line "Cuz you're a jock who was too stupid and too greedy And too unmotivated to do anything else but still be The biggest" is childish, but i feel that it just shows us that jamie is using the war issue to let his feelings out about people who will do things, even if they arent enthusiastic about them, just to get their name known.

i believe jamie is singing to his niece, in a sarcastic matter (obviously). although he enjoys her innocence, he is fully aware that she will lose it. he is letting her in on the fact that she will grow up around some emotionally-damaging people, but since she is too young to understand any of that now, she will have to grow with it at her own pace.
