| Masturbation? Really?! Well it does have a bit about being alone. "It took a life span with no cell mate." then add what Mattd23 said. Maybe. | |

| This song's such a hard shell to crack. Honestly i don't know what it means. I'd really like to know which lyrics are correct though. I think it would really help me understand the song. But hey i have a guess why it's called evil. "Sandy, why can't we look the other way." That line shows indifference and basically that's one of the manifestations of the nature of being evil. When you exercise apathy and instead, "look the other way." | |

I consider this song to be one of the most powerful songs of our time. As some of you may know Tracy Chapman is a progressive artist. Her songs are therefore aren't about trifle themes. They are simple, obvious and have great social significance. This song for example is about a woman's triumph over the vicious cycle that is mothers who are irresponsible and neglectful. She had a shitty dad and a mother who was suppose to stay but did not. Of course what sane person would want a life like that. She then leaves with her boyfriend which later becomes her husband. And like her dad becomes a drunk. The same situation with her and her mother. The situation she tried to escape from. But what does she do? Instead of leaving, she chose to stay for the kids and told her husband to either stay and change or leave. "Take your fast car and keep on driving." It's actually about a mother standing up for her children and mostly for herself. Powerful isn't it? |

| 311 – Don't Stay Home Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| the key word in this song is "home." for me it connotes a certain confinement may it be physical or mental. this song encourages adventure and exploration of the richness that is life. if youre a home buddy all your life for example. this song gives you a kick in the noggin, saying go out and go wild, youre missing out on life. on the other hand "home" may also mean a certain closemindedness that keeps you from apprecieating the different and the strange. so the chorus says: "don't stay home." That's deep! 311 rocks man! | |
