Well, I do not agree with that. America is full to the brim with guns, the vast majority of the legal. It's an absolute joke to talk about the "criminal underworld" of gun trafficking when you can buy live ammunition at the supermarket. After all, look at countries like Britain, Australia and Japan, all of which (especially Britain) have gang troubles, organised criminal networks and low-level violence on the streets. You can get a gun illegally if you know the right people and are prepared to pay the price, but the fact of the matter is 99% of self-claimed gang members will not have touched a gun in their lives. I'm not saying you can stop guns entirely, but when more people die from accidental shootings in the US than are killed overall by guns in the UK and Japan combined, you know there's a problem. And I am willing to concede that a big part of that problem is the culture of violence portrayed on TV, in films and in music. Poverty has a lot to do with it as well, despite what Bill O'Reilly might tell you. But really, scenes like the one of hundreds of Texans camping out at the Mexican border with shotguns prove that America's "gun culture" is not limited to criminal gangs and rap music. |

And are you saying that the tens of thousands of people who are killed or injured by firearms in America every year should be placed behind those with gun fetishes? Christ, you only have to look at the gun death figures to see just how many clerks are getting their heads blown off. Do you really have such low expectations of your fellow citizens that you only feel safe with a weapon in your house? The U.S. isn't much better than Afghanistan when it comes to gun control. Thing is, because of America's pathetic gun laws, the person I'd be defending myself against would probably have a gun in his hand, with ammunition bought from the K-Mart or somewhere. Your logic is laughable. You're basically saying that we should give everyone the capacity to kill others - the gun wielder is the judge, jury and executioner. Glenn Benton would be a lot more credible if he wished death upon Christians without adding some lame kind of moral justification. Amorality is better than hypocrisy. I myself am British, and to be honest I don't have to put up with much Bible-bashing. But as you say, the band are American, and in America it can be much, much worse. I would suspect that Glenn Benton had some kind of strongly Christian upbringing for him to devote so much energy in attacks against it. Kinda like how most of the early, Church-burning black metallers were from Norway's Bible Belt. |

True, it is hypocritical. Glenn Benton certainly can't claim to have the moral high ground when he wishes death upon people because of their religion. I suppose one explaination is that Benton considers Christians as exponents of such a terrible thing - Christianity - that he believes they deserve death. Certainly not something I'd agree with, but I really don't think he should be censored. After all, there are preachers on the TV who every day tell us our souls will go to Hell if we don't do as God wishes - effectively threatening people. No one makes such a ballyhoo over that. |

Satanism - that is, The Church of Satan, as was founded in the '60s, is more of a lifestyle than a religion. Anyone who actually believes that Lucifer exists is as much of an idiot as anyone who believes God exists. Glen Benton's lyrics, I believe, are an angry reaction to Christianity. Obviously I don't know for sure, but he's an articulate, intelligent man (whatever you think of him), and it would seem very strange for him to literally worship a mythical Christian creature. I don't agree that children are treated much better in other countries. I'd say most rich countries have a pretty much generically Western attitude toward minors. And kids get guns from the home, not from the streets. That's what I was referring to when I said America had poor gun laws. There simply isn't any need to go out and buy a gun illegally when a huge number of American households have weapons in the closet! I do agree with your point on drugs though. It's frightening how much power and influence the major drugs companies can exert. |

I wouldn't have bothered if it was only the odd bit of abuse, or even if it was intelligent criticism, but with the amount of times people come to this thread and say things like "this band is so not talanted omg so sick how cud anyone listen 2 it" I felt some people needed to be put in their place. It would have been quicker to just reply "You're a dick", and every now and then I do, but when people expect you to be some knuckle-dragging neanderthal for listening to Cannibal Corpse (or DM in general) that would only be reaffirming their beliefs. Do you think I listen to Cannibal Corpse because someone tells me to? Because I saw them on MTV? No, I listen to them because I think they're a pretty good death metal band. I am in no way a slave to the music I listen to. You're speaking as if I own about four CDs, all by this band. Well I don't, I listen to an abundance of different styles of music, including metal, electronic, classical, indie, noise, modern rock, Arabic classical, ambient, and more. I don't mind if people listen to pop music, that's their loss, but I do mind idiots like yourself coming in here with the false belief that, because the music you listen to is contantly heralded as both acceptable and desirable by television and the music press, death metal and the like should be seen as "bad". It's like how the Rolling Stones and The Beatles frequently top "Best Ever Band" lists in magazines - have the compilers ever even listened to, say, Squarepusher? Even if they had, there would be outrage if a drill 'n' bass record beat the Stones. But why? Because with music, like society, if you aren't "normal" (in the West that's pop, rock, and more recently, commercial hip hop and its variants) then you're simply viewed as an amusing novelty. I know this can be seen microcosmically within the genre of death metal itself, but quite frankly if you're going to put some freeform jazz elements into your one minute long grind assualt, no one's going to get in a fluster. Indeed, within such a small community, this kind of originality will probably lead to greater exposure than your average DM outfit gets. Oh, and if you can play guitar better than Cannibal Corpse then good for you - a lot of people can't. Next try Cryptopsy - good luck, fool. |

junners, as tjLPunkmaster69 pointed out, you probably have only ever heard this band's name through SongMeanings, and none of their music. Their audience is niche, and the fact that the band members all have other, "proper" jobs goes to show how much they are (not) raking it in. There is barely anything left after the production, distribution and other costs of releasing an album on a minor label like Metal Blade, which, as you rightly pointed out, is in the business of making money, but far less than, oh, say, Interscope, who U2 are signed to. Funny how I know that...must be, as you so brilliantly identified, the power of advertising. But wow, doesn't this make them a brand, and not a band? Powerful stuff indeed. And it is this power that ensures Cannibal Corpse are not shoved down your throat 24/7 in commercials, magazine exclusives, TV interviews, radio stations, MTV, and other such scruffy, likeable backroom outfits where you can phone up and speak to the boss about how much you like his latest signing. Except you can't. Metal Blade may not be a charity outfit, but if it was all about making money, then it would be a pop or rap label. Even within the heavy metal record label world it is relatively small. Your comments might have been more convincing if we were talking about a label like Nuclear Blast or Roadrunner. And if you'd bothered to read my comments on Bono, you'd know that I don't care what Bono does for charity. He could go around kicking starving children in the face in his spare time, for all I care. What I do find annoying though, is his whiny, holier-than-thou, unctuous, ingratiating and self-serving appearances at charity "events". He's the paragon of monetary greed, sauntering about as a self-appointed authority on any kind of world crisis at all, and it will be him, and him alone who solves this crisis. But first, we people at home need to give, give, give - because there are people in the world who, believe it or not, don't have a collection of mansions dotted around the world! So, to summarise - Bono - $200m+ from music - Cannibal Corpse - probably just about enough to cover the cost of buying new instruments every few years. Another quick summary - U2 - media exposure and the band mouthing off to the point of me hating their guts - Cannibal Corpse - position number seven on a song lyrics website. |

Well, I take it you're here because I offended your beloved U2. But unlike U2, Cannibal Corpse are not all over the TV and radio, and so I doubt you've heard this song, actually. "bring back the detah penalty for all you listeners to this music". Yeah, that's the spirit. As enlightened people, we must punish those who enjoy lyrics revolving around death. And being enlightened people, how must we punish them? With death, of course! Whereas I can appreciate that abortion is a thorny issue, there really shouldn't be any problem with euthanasia. If a person wants to die, then who are we to stop them? And it's simply cruel and spiteful to prosecute family members who assist a person in ending their own life. The main reason people see euthanasia as wrong is because their religion (whatever that may be) tells them it is so. And since most societies are (officially) secular, it should be a matter not involving religion. |

Well, how "innocent" one is is all relative, isn't it? I'm not saying that children are born evil or anything, just that using words like "innocent" doesn't help in what is, essentially, a biological debate. By the same token, that unborn child hasn't contributed anything to society; indeed, it may cost the state more to see its birth through than to have it aborted. So let's not go down that road. Of course, people have different opinions of what constitutes a human being. I do not believe the mass of cells present in the first trimester are enough to make a "person", and no amount of "oh, but it's a little baby!" or "it hasn't done anything to you" is going to change my mind. |
