I'm sure most people who listen to Leonard Cohen have had encounters with past lovers who they still care for very much and who still care for them, but alas they both know that it will never work, which to me, that's exactly what the song is about. Person A loves Person B. Person B loves Person A. They know they can't be together so they have passionate encounters, ones they will always treasure, then go back to living their lives as if nothing has happened. |

I've always figured it was about a girl at the movies just trying to escape from a judgemental world. I can see how Bowie would relate to that. Or he wrote the song not knowing what it was going to be about. Just because he wrote it doesn't mean that he knows what it's about. |

Elvis Costello has said in a few interviews that songs that he has written about fictional people eventually become real people. I had never heard the abortion theory before, but I do know that amidst his affair with Bebe Buell some years later she had to have an abortion because she was pregnant with his child. So the abortion theory very well could be true. |

It seems that whenever Elvis talks about dancing it usually means sex (Mystery Dance, No Dancing), especially on his first album. And in the song The Angles Wanna Wear My (Red Shoes) there’s the lyric “I was watching while you were dancing away/ our love got fractured in the echo and sway/ How come everybody wants to be your friend?” Judging by that, I’d say he’s fallen in love with a big slut. And the lyric “She gets so tired of the lust/ but it’s so hard to refuse” I think just supports my theory that the woman is just a big hussy. |
