| Alkaline Trio – If You Had A Bad Time Lyrics | 21 years ago |

The lyrics are wrong. The chorus is as follows: "Just some words of advice, maybe you've heard them before but here goes: Just be true to yourself if it lands you in hell, well at least now you know. Loud and clear is your heart, big and bright are the places you might someday go. With one million things holding you down, why you're one of those things, I don't know. No big deal, gotta go." So actually it's not someone holding him down, it's someone holding themself down. Also the little bridge part was wrong too: "It just sits on my shoulders, you're breaking my neck. We get crazy with age, now you're under my bed and it's dark all the time." Okay. |

| AFI – Morningstar Lyrics | 21 years ago |

I think 'Morningstar' definitely refers to Satan in this song, but I don't think the song is ABOUT Satan. The way I see it, this song is about a person on the verge of dying and descending into Hell. "I saw a star beneath the stairs" The 'star' here is the Morningstar, Satan. The stairs may well be a stairway to Heaven, as some have suggested, since it would make sense for Satan to be located in Hell, below the stairs to Heaven. "Glowing through the melting walls" The walls surrounding the person are melting because as he dies, both his vision and perceptions of the material world begin to fade and melt together. The Morningstar is glowing brighter because as the world of the living fades, Hell becomes more apparent, glowing through the fading walls. When he asks "who will be the first to begin their fall, or will we become one?" I think he is addressing either God or Satan, because he is going to 'become one' with one of them after death, but he doesn't know which one. He doesn't know which way he's going, Heaven or Hell. "Glowing bright before descent" The glow of the Morningstar increases as the person is dying, but before descending into Hell. "In the morning, there is nothing left but what's inside of me." This refers to the fact that the person won't live through the night, and all that will be left of him in the morning is what's inside of him, his soul, no longer in a body. During the chorus, the person is asking what will happen, which way he will go. I think he is kind of pleading to God here, because he doesn't want to spend eternity in Hell. "Am I the star beneath the stairs?" He is asking if he is doomed to Hell. 'Will I become one with the Morningstar?' I don't exactly understand the "ghost upon the stage" part; I've read it was referenced in another AFI song though, but from context I'm taking it as just another way to ask about his final destination. The person is appealing to God for one last chance into Heaven. "Am I your anything?" 'Do I mean anything to you, God?' 'Are you going to let this happen to me?' "I don't want to die tonight." This can be looked at a few ways. 1) I suppose it could be that the person doesn't want to die, but wants another chance at life in this world to make things right and redeem himself. or 2) However, I think when he says he doesn't want to die tonight, what he means is that he doesn't want to go to Hell, but to live eternally. His physical death (i.e. the end of his mortal life) is already taking place, and is not in question. "Will you believe in me tonight?" Will you have faith in me and 1) let me have a second chance at life on Earth. or 2) let me into Heaven (though I deserve Hell), because I acknowledge my sin. "I don't want to fall into the light." I don't want to descend into Hell, into the light of the Morningstar. "Will you wish upon [me]? Will you walk upon me?" Will I go to Heaven or Hell? It's been said that a new star appears whenever someone dies [assuming they go to Heaven]. So if you wish upon me, I ascend to Heaven. Or it could just mean that people wish on stars, which are located in the Heavens. Either way, same effect. If you walk upon me, I descend into the Morningstar's realm. "I don't want to die tonight." After all, what's more important to a person that the final destination of their soul? The reason this song is so great is because there's an eerie feeling throughout it as the person pleads to God for his soul, that none of it will matter. It's already to late. He's damned to Hell. This song is about the most tragic fate in the universe. So yeah, good song. |
