Another thing I forgot to write....from stories I heard about people in the porn industry or people who are abused or raped..the way to survive is to seperate yourself from your body...the lines "that there...thats not me..." conjure a perfect image of that |

This song mesmerizes me and also scares me how quickly it can depress me....I first heard it while talking to a friend who was contemplating suicide, I felt like for an instant I could enter into her brain..preferring just not to exist....to shut everything out...
Scary and yet beautiful |

I am listening to it right now on a dreary minnesota fall day, today it is calming to me, and other times i have driven around in my car with it on repeat just SOBBING...There isn't any particular thing about it that is so sad, just the combination of the words with the vocals and the guitar that grows...
Who hasn't felt that way....we are so thirsty for love we are willing to try what we know is fake, but we can't fool our hearts...
What an amazing song |

Interesting! Everything you all have said makes sense. I always took it to be that she is probably married to an abusive man, most likely one who cheats on her and is very domineering. He is abusive emotionally, verbally, perhaps physically, but she remains in the relationship because she is afraid to leave, not quite strong enough to take that step. Maybe her whole self-image comes from who she is in this relationship. |

To me, this song is about the self-esteem of women and what we put ourselves through for recognition of any kind- even cheap sexuality like in the song. The boys find her ugly, but she is so willing to receive attention that she will grant sexual favors. So sad that women are created to be treasured, but often are just tossed aside or treated as playthings. I think the precious things are her failed attempts to acheive recognition. What a sad beautiful song- often seen it at dance recitals- VERY powerful. I love it. |
