The Beatles – This Boy Lyrics 10 years ago
I've also read 'this boy' and 'that boy' as being two sides of a single personality. The idea that we often have the destructive urge towards the things that we love is embedded in a lot of John's songs at this time.

The Kinks – Funny Face Lyrics 10 years ago
I think it's about terminal illness, and the helplessness that comes with watching a loved one die and knowing that there's nothing you can do.

This a sort of messy song that's easy to pass over, but there's a lot to it. I think there's a shift in narration during the bridge. Those two lines are from the girl's perspective.

The Kinks – Afternoon Tea Lyrics 10 years ago
Usually the lyrics for songs about girls leaving can be boiled down to "Please come back! I can't live with out you! I'll change, I promise!" or of course, "Well I didn't need you anyway!"

I like that the narrator here mostly seems hurt that she didn't stay to have one last cup of tea. I also appreciate that the relationship feels more like a close friendship than something romantic or sexual. That's something rare among 60s pop songs. (Or pop songs from any era).

Jay Reatard – It's So Easy Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't know if he meant it more literally but I take this song as being about isolating yourself from your former friends because maybe life is easier when you only have to worry about yourself. of course it's really not easier because without friends you have no one to rely on when things go bad for you, but it's an easy trap to fall into, especially when you're depressed.

The Kinks – Apeman Lyrics 14 years ago
This is a great song, but I do think that it can be construed as culturally insensitive or ethnocentric if only because of the reference to voo-doo. The concept of voo-doo is closely linked with African and African American cultures and he groups it with living in the trees, Tarzan, King Kong, etc. You can see how someone would be offended by this.

Caetano Veloso – London, London Lyrics 14 years ago
I think you're right about most of what you said. It could also be a reference to a song on his previous album called "não identificado" ('Unidentified' in English). Here are some of the lyrics to that song in english:

I'll make a love song
To record onto a flying saucer*
A song telling her everything
I'm still alone, in love
To launch into outer space

My passion will shine in the night
In the sky of a small town
As an unidentified object

*(a play on words. in portuguese flying saucer is 'disco voador' or 'flying disc'. disco can also mean 'record')

So while he's wandering the streets of london he is searching for the feelings and emotions that he left behind floating over the skies of brazil.

Os Mutantes – Bat Macumba Lyrics 15 years ago
Well macumba does mean something along the lines of 'black magic' as far as I know. I was never clear on what 'bat' signified here. I do know that the way the lyrics look written out is a reference to concrete poetry, which is a form of poetry where the words written form symbolic shapes, and which was largely invented in Brazil.

Bob Dylan – Bob Dylan's Dream Lyrics 15 years ago

Os Mutantes – Domingo no Parque Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is by Gilberto Gil, with Os Mutantes serving as a backing band. It's a pretty dark song, here's a very good translation of lyrics that I found.

Sunday in the Park

The king of fooling around—eh, José
The king of confusion—eh, João
One worked at the market—eh, José
The other in construction—eh, João

Last week, on the weekend
João decided not to fight
On Sunday afternoon he went out hastily
And did not go to Ribeira* to play
Capoeira
He did not go to Ribeira
He went out with his girlfriend

José as always on the weekend
Closed up his booth and disappeared
He went to take a walk
in the park
There, near Boca do Rio*
It was in the park that he caught sight of
Juliana
That's what he saw

Juliana on the Ferris wheel with João
A rose and an ice cream in her hand
Juliana, his dream, an illusion
Juliana and his friend João
The rose's thorn stuck Zé
And the ice cream froze his heart

The ice cream and the rose—oh, José
The rose and the ice cream—oh, José
Hey, dancing in the breast—oh, José
Of José the jokester—oh, José

The ice cream and the rose—oh, José
The rose and the ice cream—oh, José
Hey, spinning in the mind—oh, José
Of José the jokester—oh, José

Juliana spinning—hey, spinning
Hey, on the giant wheel—hey, spinning
Hey, on the giant wheel—hey, spinning
The friend João—hey, João

The ice cream is strawberry— it is red
Hey, spinning, and the rose—it is red
Hey, spinning, spinning—it is red
Hey, spinning, spinning—look at
the knife

See the blood on the hand—eh, José
Juliana on the ground—eh, José
Another body has fallen—eh, José
His friend João—eh, José

Tomorrow there will not be a market
—eh, José
There is no more construction—eh, João
There is no more fooling around
—eh, José
There is no more confusion—
eh, João

*Both are neighborhoods of
Salvador, Bahia

Os Mutantes – Proibido Proibir Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a classic song. Caetano Veloso wrote and sang it, but the instrumentation is all the Mutates. Try to find the live version of the song which is really a battle between Caetano and the band and an angry crowd who doesn't want to see electric guitars in brazilian music. Very powerful.

Also, listen to the original version with Gal Costa singing. It's classic, but very different from this one.

Os Mutantes – Baby Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, the english version from the 70's isn't a direct translation. My portuguese isn't the best, but here's a rough translation:

you need to know of the pool
of margarine, of carolina, of gasoline
you need to know of me

baby baby
I know that it's so

you need to have an ice cream
in the cafeteria, walking with people
see me up close
listen to the song by roberto

baby baby
how long

you need to learn english
need to learn what I know
and what I don't know yet

I know with me comes everything blue
with you comes everything in peace
we live in the best city
of south america
of south america
you need to, you need to
i don't know, read my shirt

baby baby
i love you

I think there's a few brazilian culture references that I don't totally get in there.

Os Mutantes – Made In Brazil Lyrics 16 years ago
First of all, this song is not called 'Made in Brazil', it's called 'Parque Industrial'. Second, it's not written by Os Mutantes, and I'm not even sure they perform on it.

It's by Tom Ze, and is from the album "Tropicalia ou Panis et Circensis" That album was a put out as a sort of mission statement for the Tropicalia movement (of which Os Mutates were members) and features collaborations between all the cheif members of Tropicalia including Os Mutantes.

In case anyone's wondering, the first singer is Gilberto Gil, then Gal Costa, then Caetano Veloso, and then Tom Ze himself sings later on.

That said, this is a freaking awesome song and is up there with Os Mutantes best, so anyone curious should check it out (and all the other tropicalia songs).

Os Mutantes – A Minha Menina Lyrics 16 years ago
Here's a pretty basic translation. My Portuguese isn't great, but this should help you get the picture.

she's my girl
I'm her boy
she's my love
and I'm all her love

the silver moon is hidden
and the golden sun appeared
a beautiful day has dawned
smelling happiness (may be an expression that doesn't translate literally)
because I dreamed
and I woke up thinking of her

the intro repeats, and then:

the rose has blossomed
and the blossom was her (I'm kind of taking a guess on those last two lines, I think that's the gist of what he's saying)
for her I put my heart
in front of reason
and I tell the whole world
how I love her

then it repeats a few times

This song is originally by Jorge Ben, who is another great Brazilian musician from the 60's and later decades. He was a pretty big influence on Os Mutantes and is definitely worth checking out.

Van Morrison – Bright Side Of The Road Lyrics 18 years ago
I was in a city the other day, and it occured to me that because of the tall buildings and the angle of the sun, during most of the day one side of the street is always bright and the other is cast in shadow. I wonder if that's what he means by the 'bright side of the road'.

I was expelled from a private bording school once upon a time and now that I'm going to my school in my far-away hometown and I'll hear or say things that remind me of people I used to know from time to time, but I can't share them because no one else would know what I'm talking about.

This song isn't quite written as consolation to Chiba, it's a little bit darker then that.
