Animal Collective – Taste Lyrics 13 years ago
It's a question.. does everything around you make you who you are? In my opinion, they're mocking this idea with the followup question "Does the music that I make play on my awkward face?" It's as if to say that the beauty lies in what's produced, not in how the presenter is dressed. You can't hear their music by looking at them, ya know?

The Shins – Young Pilgrims Lyrics 13 years ago
"And ended up the kind of kid
Who goes down Chutes Too Narrow
Just eking out my measly pipes"

He's painting a picture of himself as a kid in a well here. A kid would scream for help trapped in a dark hole, he sings to address the emptiness of life. The phrase "winter slide" is a bit of a pun illustrating that he is sliding into depression during the winter time when the scenery is bleak and there's nothing to do but think about the emptiness of life. Hence there are no sparrows in the dismal landscape he's trapped in.

The Shins – Young Pilgrims Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's clear that he is addressing his personal incapability to accept the lessons taught by those "tried and true" stories we're told since childhood. Hell, the way he sings it it almost sounds like "trite and true" which I think was intentional. I think he's just sort of pointing out his own cynicism, or perhaps disillusionment with the line "if you're able, I'd suggest it." He's saying that he is not personally able to go back with any conviction to those tales having had his modern thoughts. Rather, he has figured out ways (not described here) on how to avoid plummeting into the dark park of his mind because he knows all that lies at the end of that is a destructive crash.

In answer to your question, lines like "fate isn't what we're up against, there's no design, no flaws to find" point to a non-religious belief. When you truly delve into that thought, it can be dark as you realize that our existence is arbitrary and meaningless.

Death Cab for Cutie – Marching Bands of Manhattan Lyrics 20 years ago
It's pretty good. I think what's annoying me about this album is that its not a very natural transition from Transatlanticism and more importantly the older albums.. The remnents I find of the sounds from those albums are slightly off and it just feels like this album is firing on 5 cylinders.. It's good, and songs are growing on me, but it doesn't feel natural.

Nickel Creek – Helena Lyrics 20 years ago
I get the impression that the narrator has regrets for leading this girl, Helena, on in what she saw as a relationship and he saw as a fling. It really says it all in the lines "While I wait for her to give me any reason to leave" and "Guys like me never sleep alone at night." It seems like he might be leaving the new girl for Helena, but really he's just looking for an excuse to break up with her because that's the sort of shallow character he is.

Wasn't sure about the line "In your debts, oh my girl" so leave your corrections here if you have a better idea.

This song is a really awesome strum/sing along and sounds great acoustic.. cool song.

I meant to add this: it's a neat way of saying "you have a sinking feeling in your heart" -- not really that you're heart is packed full of feelings so its heavy.

This song feels like a rehab sort of emotion. It seems uphill, as per the lighting the cigarette backwards, delusions of things working out right etc. The friends part reminds me that the speaker has changed and can't get back to old friends because of the barrier caused by the rehab.

I don't really see why mentioning the word "heart" has to indicate love.

Iron & Wine – Naked as We Came Lyrics 21 years ago
Sad and pretty little tale of an old couple with simple habits and a wise knowledge of what is to come of their lives. It's a pretty image, of the man staying in bed just to absorb the senses of his wife, and the small talk they make there.
The image of the couple being awake and talking about their iminant death while their children sleep gives the impression that the elders in the world, those who have gained a respect for the motion of life, still attempt to ignore the painful truth that the knowledge brings and just lay smiling (even though the children might be very young or old, children gives that "naive person" impression... as to say, ignorant of death's inevitability) and happy.
And of course, the overall picture, dieing inside the arms of the other is quite a nice touch to the message that you can find solace in love and dedication.
I love this song (=

Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics 21 years ago
"I don't think he means the universe is literally the shape of the earth. Scientifically, the universe is thought of as probably not being a sphere, being that it would mostly likely collapse in that shape"

This was said up there.. and actually it's not so true. The universe is thought to maybe exist in the shape of a sphere if it has any shape at all. It's one of the mathematical problems they're trying to address, being, the abilty to perceive four dimensions. There's alot of proofs that show the universe as a sphere. But then again there's the idea that since "space" is considered to be nothing, it could stretch to infinity. So, let's just assume he meant exactly what he said..

Weezer – Butterfly Lyrics 21 years ago
Well, I like to take this song differently...
when you grab at inspiration, and try to express it as a song, you lose something. To me that's what this song is... let's go through:

He goes outside for the butterfly, the beautiful elusive creature that isn't really meant to be captured, but you can't help but do it because its so beautiful. that's the inspiration

then when you go back to that inspiration, most likely an emotion or a feeling, you didn't really capture it, and what you try to remember is dead. think of that famous line this way : "Every time i pen down what i think i want it slips away..." Every time you try to write down exactly what you mean, you can't. There's not an allignment of words in existense equal to the beauty of the inspirational butterfly.

Returning to the song is of course impossible, because you have wasted the inspiration. It is dead and vapid compared to when you first tried to catch it.

It's probly not about any of this... the Madame Butterfly explanation makes much more sense, but i still love to think of it this way.

Death Cab for Cutie – Transatlanticism Lyrics 21 years ago
There's an error in the actually lyrics to the song, as they were written (don't call me a nit-picker, its just interesting that no one caught it.. that or they thought it sounded better but whatever)

The line "the rhythm of my footsteps crossing flatlands/ to your door have been silenced, forevermore" has a mismatched verb.. The verb "have" should be "has" since it's describing the action of "rhythm", which is singular. I think it sounds right because right before he says "footsteps" which seems like it should have a plural verb after it. Anyway, back to my cave.

Sublime – Pawn Shop Lyrics 21 years ago
It now reminds me of the visual created in Requiem in the very first scene. Brad's story is too sad for me to think about;
Sublime is one of my favorite bands, and certainly one of my most mourned.

The Postal Service – Nothing Better Lyrics 21 years ago
The goalie lines most likely refer to lacrosse which is broken into quarters. Soccer does not possess a term "goal tending" . Rather, in lacrosse and basketball there is such a term due to the small sice of the net. So, this adds a little to the image clarity of the song: He's trying as hard as he can to hide the door from her sights as they work in opposite directions.

Her perspective is that of utility. She contrasts his idealistic
attraction with pure logic ("charts and graphs.. lecture"). The "lure" she feels is hardly what she expected, but she certainly does not need him for her greater goals.

It makes me think of a woman who would marry a producer to get a role in a movie. ;p
