The Higher – Pace Yourself Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is riddled with contradictions:
1) "You can't write the same song over again, It's in the same key" There are hundreds of thousands of songs writtin in the same key... if your not familiar with keys here's one for example... G... there are literally endless songs in the key of G

2)"Making up for miles, just a little while." Miles take along time to make up for, its not some small off-handed event.

3)"Underestimating, you know you think we're doing so good" An underestimation would be thinking that "we" are not doing good at all

4)"Glad to be a part... danger" He says he's glad to be a part of a bunch of negative rhetoric...

5)"Race on the... way to apathy" Racing to do nothing? Hurry up and stop?

6) (my personal favorited) "life's little let downs, spontaneity" A spontanious event is not preconcieved... you can be dissapointed by something that you didn't plan on happening... Its like saying, "i'm dissapointed that someone didn't walk up to me today and give me a million dollars"

That's one in just about every line!

As for the line "Glad to be a part... ...danger" I think it could mean the exact oposite of what was mentioned in the earlier post. Since it is her heart that is "whithered" and "incased and left for danger" it's more likely that she is the victum. However, going with the theme of contradiction, maybe this person has not been heartbroken in anyway but is merely avoiding heartbreak. The "encasing" is evidence of this. In this case, the let down is more of the absense of spontineity, this person is completely afraid and avoids any spontaneous action. She's "running the road to apathy" and, since she does not allow the narrator into her "heart", he is glad to simply be running beside her.

The Higher – Histrionics Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't know where the sourberville got his definition from, but i've never heard of that use of histrionics. Histrionic is actually an adjective not a noun, its used to describe actions that are intentionally dramatic, more specifically, actions dealing with acting or theather. "Histrionics repeats itself all over again" refers to the first line where the dramatic event of the boy crumbling is viewed for a number of times.

The lyrics depict an event in a theatrical manner, as if the narrator were watching a play of some event that heppened. This event could have been involving him, but the significance is that he constantly watches it over and over as if it was being acted out infront of him.

Maybe we should further this discussion under Pulmonary Archery... But, to comment on that: I don't think the reference to the Alamo or the "little hope for the white man" lines are racist. It sounds more like he the lyrics support the "penatration of the alamo" or the fact that there is "little hope for the white man." He never really says that these things are bad or that he is in oppisition to them...

countchocula, I can see how you would think this band is racist, but without a sound justification (and i mean like the band members proclaiming "I am racist") then you can't know for sure. So dont get all worked up and call people names and yell "screemo bands suck." You don't look any cooler for doing it. And hey, it's just one band, chill out.

I don't think any references are made towards racism in their songs. Just because a band says "white man" does not mean their racist. Maybe people should start taking into consideration the context in which these words are used and not the words idependently.

I don't know. I guess I'm a little hung up about Christian people who feel the need to flaunt their Christianity... Isn't there a verse in the bible that says something like... "Don't be like the hypocrite who prays in the street... Go in your room and shut the door to pray..." I'm not exactly sure how it's worded, maybe you will know calebsystem3 you seem to be more involved than me...

"The 'Christian' industry is all about selling Christ's name on CDs, shirts, stickers, and books. We feel that commercializing "Christianity" is wrong. It is taking the Lords name in vein in a terrible way."
-Copeland

For all of you who are wardering why all Christain bands don't jump up and down screeming "I'm a Christain!", this is something to think about.

Underoath – A Boy Brushed Red ... Living In Black And White Lyrics 21 years ago
The only thing i think that has been left out is the fact that this song deals with sex as an unhealthy addiction. "This is what makes me feel alive... Tie me up and toss this key... I'm such a fool for you... *I'm so addicted*..."

As for the Christianity thing... I think this song doesn't reference Christianity at all. However, the idea for the song is probably a product of Christian moral. However his references to death and pain are not suggesting that they are dead in gods view or dead in their faith, it's more of a personal regret taken upon themselves. Such lines as, "Longs are fading as we both stop bleeding. My/Your heart is dead, it's way past beating," and, "Well look who's dying now, slit your wrists for sleeping with the girl next door," are products of personal discomfort with what they've done. These fealings are not begotten by outside influence or "Divine Judgement".

I just say Emery last weekend and this is what they had to say about this song:

"This song is about getting a tour manager from California... and you don't know how things are going to work out, but you end up falling in love with him"

Obviously it's not really about a tour manager. Unless of couse the band members are into group-homosexual relationships with people they are professionally involved with. haha. I mean, who holds hands with their tour manager... I guess this is just an example the demonstrates how you should not always take what people say on stage (or even in there songs on occasion) literally... He probably mean to say "This song is for our tour manager from California."

I'm not picking sides here but, come on... name calling? spelling corrections? Posting "these lyrics suck, this band sucks" on a site thats meant to discuss the meaning of lyrics, not their value or appeal? Also, what has this particualar band done to you? Has some grievance been taken up against you by an AOF fan and this is that person's creul payback? Or are you posting "this band sucks!" for every artist included in this website that you don't like? Suffice to say, i don't think such postings are appreciated. Maybe a symple, "I think this band's really going down hill," could have replaced, "I think these might be the worst lyrics i've ever heard." Everybody... if you have that much need for confrontation, find it elsewhere. You will be no bigger, tougher, or smarter of a person by calling names on an internet message board.

Anyway, about the song...
Since this guy seems to be so down on cocain, more specifically its fashonable use, maybe there was some harsh personal experience that he went through...

I'm surprised only one person has talked about what this song means. I know its kind of obvious, but this site is called "songmeanings," right?
Anyway, for those who haven't broke the code yet...
This song is about someone who has an antipathy for doctors. More specifically, it focuses on a person sitting in a waiting room and thinking about how much he doesn't want to be there. It reminds me of trips to the dentist as a kid. Hearing the drill in the other room freaks the hell out you. Oh yeah, the waiting room in the song is for the ER. You can tell by the fact that most other practices don't deal with life and death, and the song is called "Accidents." Bad accidents usually entail a trip to the ER.

Emery – Fractions Lyrics 21 years ago
Your almost right on Chriscom. This song is about something we all know and love: the casual hook-up. This song is about a guy and his sex-buddy. For some reason they are not together but keep getting it on. However, the narrotor (most likely the guy) fell for her. I think the line "people steal from you, they take anything they choose" is a reference to his "heart"- ya know, love. Saying "you stole my heart" is cheezy though, thats probably why its not in the song, its just suggested. Very notable is the line that says "when we have these mornings when we *can* say goodby" If they were in love then they wouldnt be able to say goodbye. I think the lines "its good to see you... choices to make" are all things that he's thinking, but doesnt say. He doesn't want to breech the sex-buddy rules. The last stanza is really what shows his fealings. So, its basically about a guy falling in love with his sex-buddy.

The song is about a guy going out with a girl, but this guy is thinking about a normal realtionship where two people share a common "love" for each other and he comes to the dramitic realization, after staying up for three nights, that this isn't the way a normal relationship should function. He tries and tries to make things work but she doesnt seem to care: "your so good at taking your time to get back to me". And then he puzzles together the situation and realizes that maybe this girl is interested in someone else (who hasn't seen this scenario played out) but he is still trying to make things work: "your head is elsewhere and im talking enough for both of us". He then identifies that they've talked about this before: "i thought that you said things were improving" but it still seems she's "carless", "insulting", and "brusing". He pours his heart out to her and she doesn't care. Then comes the break up. The last part just grieving, all the "why's" and "how could you's"

Copeland – When Paula Sparks Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is most likely about about that fase of longing, usually when you just realize that you like someone. This guy loves being around Paula. When she is sleeping he watches her and longs for the moment when she awakes. When she does awake it "sparks a light", its like a dramatic realization that his waiting is over. Is kind of like when kids wake up Christmas mourning and see their presents. It's a present surprise that is contrastingly expected. The use of the word sparks is meant to envoke fealings of joy. Much how the word light is often used connotatively to signify fealings of euphoria. For example the common cliche "you light up my life". That's basically it.

I stand behind joshisapunk. It's not crazy to believe that a Christian band has the capacity to write about something other than god or christianity. Is god the only influence in a reiligious person's life? It's pretty closed minded to automatically come to such an unsound conclusion and justifying it by saying "they're a christian band. Christian bands sing about god."

I don't know where you got the death of christ from...
"I held your face"? "Your last words will sustain me"?
We'ren't christ's last words "into your hands i commend myself"? I think its a personal death. ALso, he references his death alot. "untill my end.. untill i see you again... when we will be as one..." Maybe he is thinking about his own death? Maybe the griefe is too much and he wants to die.

Emery – Walls Lyrics 21 years ago
I think this song is more vain, more personal. The beginning maps out a crime scene where the criminals take defense inside a building as their opponents wait outside. The only form of communication between the two is via written letters. It's notable that writting letters is physically non-violent.
The crime scene is revealed as a metaphor in the second "stanza". The actual situation is one of the narrator and a significant other. The narrator takes harsh verbal abuse and the "walls" are a type of emotional defense that he has taken up. The point that stands is that the narrator didn't just build these walls to keep himself from the verbal abuse; the walls are like boudries that keep his relationship with this other person non-violent, such as the criminals are not physically violent in writing the letters. But it is also very important to know that these words are detramental and have much influence over the narrator. This is shown by the wripping of the pages and the breaking nuckles. So, the narrator is so effected by this influence that he hurts himself in fits of anger. As he "locks the doors from the inside" he locks himself in a place where he physically hurts himself..... To sum up that part: a guys "girlfriend" (or friend or whoever) yells at him (or hurts him in some non-violent way) and instead of reacting to his friend he gets angry and takes it out on himself. (It's kinda like when you get so mad that you punch walls or some other inanimate object.)
The last paragraph basically identifies the fact that there is hope and the narrator does feel very connected to this person that causes him pain. He dreams of the day when things will be better, but at the same time he respects his situation: "this place, these walls, mean everything to me."

Shnikej, actually, the song could be strickly based on the novel, I guess there's no way of knowing unless we actually heard it from the composer, however, it is not your place to say that the song is not based soley on the novel (unless of course you wrote it). With my words "I believe this song is about John Steinbeck's novel etitiled Of Mice and Men," I was merely suggestive (I only said "I believe it is about" not "It is about"). However when you said "the song is not an interpretation of the novel, it's only redeming a theme" you implied that this knowledge was factual (you knew it to be completely true). The Steinbeck thoery was just that; a thoery. It was what I believed the song was about. However yours was not a thoery; you were simply saying that is how it must be.
Sorry about the whole "i think you all are slightly off" thing. It wasn't meant to be taken in the way that it apperntly was. I didn't realize the formality of the postings I guess and its just more comfortable for me to say "you".
about your p.s. I can see what you mean about the quote and how the novel doesn't really mention anything of second tries and what not. I guess if I felt up to it I could give you some roundabout explanation for why it works, but frankley I don't care that much. But you must realize the ambiguity of song lyrics in general and keep in mind indirect meaning, expression, metaphors, sybolism, etc. I hope you know what I'm talking about having taken a poetry class. Also i assume that you have spawned some original poetry and if you have you probably realize that it is not always easy to put your thoughts in words expecially considering this case in which one would have to consider rythm, cadence, and meter. If you haven't already tried writing a song, try it. You will realize that sometimes its just better to put what is pleasing to the ear and not what is pleasing the mind. haha nice quote if you ask me
Anyways, thanks for jumpin on board with my Steinbeck shpeel. I'm not a fan of the band but the song is pretty catchy.

I think all of you are slightly off. I believe this song is about John Steinbeck's novel etitiled Of Mice and Men. The book is about the life of two struggling labor workers in times of the great depression. However, the sub-plot to the story manifests the character of Goerge's desire for a better life and the fact that he is held within this labor stricken state by his obligation to take care of his handicapped friend. This song tells about George's feelings of longing for this better life from which he is being witheld. If you read the lyrics is easy to see what I'm talking about. The line that really gives it away is "...dreaming about providence and whether mice and men have second tries..." If you're still confused go read the book. At a wopping ninety something pages it shouldn't keep you up all night.
