Not sure about the Courtney Love thing...as far as I know, Courtney and Kat were good friends, and were in several bands together before going there separate ways. And as for the title being a reference to the Hole song Violet, I'm pretty sure the Babes in Toyland song was written before Hole's Violet was even released. |

and i know this is a forum for songmeanings, not general oppinions, but i'm curious as to why nameless97 thiks that ANY woman would ask to go thru the ordeal of rape. It's people with that attitude that this song is against! I'm sure Kathleen hanna would not be pleased to hear you like her song. |

This is not an anti-male song, it's an anti rape song. At the beginning of the song (in some versions anyway) there's this soundclip of a guy talking about how some girls ask to be raped etc...I assume the song is directed at him, he is the 'white boy' of the title. But obviously it's also directed towards the whole 'she was asking for it' attitude many people have.
Amazing song. You cannot listen to this witout feeling incredibly angry at some people in this world. |

I don't know about the specific references (the jeans with her name on them, mermaids, etc), and i don't think anyoen can really know this except Tori. But to me, the general theme of the song seems to be about finding your 'voice' and feeling liberated and strong. Knwoing Tori's feminist beliefs, this seems a likely explanation.
It could relate to an abusive relationship, but she doesn't seem to have a wholey negative attitude towards this other person. |
