I think that this song is actually divided into three sections being told by the point of view of three people. The first one is Amy's, and ends where the father starts talking, the second one is the father's, ending where the song talks about Amy waking up, which I think is where the boy starts talking. The subtlty of this song is unspeakable. |

This song actuall is the most different of all Bright Eyes songs to me. It doesn't sound like Conor Oberst wrote it at all. I actually think that this song may be from the perspective of the other, (the girl as opposed to Conor's or the boy's). I don't know, it just sounds like the person singing the song knows more about what is going on in the other person's head than their own. |

"Dude," Conor doesn't sing punk music, and therefore could not be emo. Emo is a subgenre of DC-based punk music, like Embrace, the Rites of Spring, or even Sunny Day Real Estate. Conor does however sing music that is emotional to some people, but that doesn't make him emo. This interview is really hilarious, but if you have ever talked to Conor, he doesn't sound like Todd. Conor has a funny, mid-western accent. Check out the beginning of Let's Not Sh!t Ourselves to get an example of Conor's speaking voice. |

I don't think that this song is about not believing in God at all, after all, Conor Oberst went to Catholic school. I think it is just completely focused on self-loathing/self-doubt. The whole song is like talking from the point of view of the healthy psyche about the part of oneself that says you are not good enough, you are weak, you suck. |

I think that a ghost is singing the song, and that he doesn't know that he is dead. The song mentions that he is sick, and that he doesn't get better. Maybe he thinks that she is deserting him when really he is dead and she has to leave. |

I think that this song is about a failed suicide attempt.
e.g. "So I fell like that girl from a balance beam...I lifted one foot to cross the other and I felt myself slipping in, It was a small mistake, Sometimes that's all it takes...Now I'm staring at my wrist, Hoping that the time is right..."
And then he says "But in all of my salvation, I still felt imprisoned in this holding cell, That is myself, So I wait for the day when I hear the key..." I think that means that he is waiting to die so he won't have to live with himself any longer.
Then, "and I will sing of a graveyard grey, and a garden green...and we won't ever have to worry about how this song or story ends..."
I think this means that he understands that he isn't making any sense, but when it's all over everything will make sense. |
