| I love the emotion in his voice, especially the first line "we both want the world..." i love the contrast between "...than kiss them goodnight" and then it gets quiet for "but then sometimes you can make a room feel perfect..." the altering level of intensity gives it more feeling. | |

| Thanks to MavrikGandalf for your interpretation. I think that most of the interpretations on here make sense, but i like the suicide one the best. Quite a few AFI songs can be interpreted as being about suicide and depression, and normally i try not to think of them all as being about that, but this one fits really well. I like the whole persepective thing how you get what the guy and the girl are thinking. Their lives are such a tangled mess, i want to know what happened that led to suicide. This song is really sad, but it's beautiful at the same time. AFI lyrics make things as bad as suicide sound so poetic and the music is awesome as well, I can't believe more people haven't heard of them. | |

ok, this is what i get when i listen to it, could be wrong, but seeing as noone else seems to be posted a meaning, i'm gonna try anyway. "Trapped inside of your eyes, Gleam like stars above, emptiness inside. Caught inside of your arms, warmer than the sun, Emptiness so full." He is totally in love with this girl, she is all he sees, but she doesn't see it, she's empty inside, and she's not happy. "Although I can see, time is not running out, I still run behind everything. I don't understand, I embrace every thought, Every word Everything. " He feels like she's off in her own little world, she's ahead of him and although he tries to catch up and enter her world, he just can't. She won't let him in, she may not realise he feels this way, and he doesn't understand why she can't see it and why she won't let him in. He loves everything about her "embrace every thought, every word, everything". "You're watching, my heart being, so close to you, Your bleeding thoughts. Open wounds still breathing You're my everything, You're my everything..." He is so close to her that he thinks she should be able to see how he feels about her, but she's still hung up about an old relationship (which may or may not have been with him). She's till thinking about this relationship and cut by it ("bleeding thoughts"). She's been hurt, "open wounds still breathing" and she's not over it yet. "Left behind hateful thoughts, overwhelmed by your mind, lost in time again. Shadows bringing me down, jealous of your face, drowning in your awe. " He is so in love with this girl, he has no hate for her or for anything, and he is in his own little world thinking about her ("lost in time again"). The "shadows" that are bringing him down could be the hurt that the girl still feels about her previous relationship. He is drowning in her awe, he thinks shes so beautiful and loves her so much but it's killing him. Although, i have heard that drowning is a peaceful way to die. "Tears of unseen light, heart stopping. Tears of unseen hope, heart stopping. " When you're sad, you cry, so the tears of unseen light could be him expressing his sadness that she doesn't see his love, "unseen light" (the light could be his love for her). But he still has hope that it will work out. "You're my everything, you're my everything... The truth brings new meaning, you're my everything, and time stands still." Gotta love this ending. The truth has finally come out, but we don't know how she has reacted! She is still his 'everything' though, and she is still the only thing he sees. Well that's all I have to say, i hope this makes sense. I don't know if it's right or not, but this is what i think the song is about. It's kind of sad in a way, but beautiful at the same time. What do other people think it's about??? |

well i think this is a song about a relationship that has gone wrong. "you've torn the warmth of my everyday world away" indicates that he's in a lot of pain because of this girl. She has done something wrong, "You're a liar girl, fold your hand and walk away". She hasn't been honest with him, so he wants her to leave and he wants it to end, even though he is not over her and isn't getting over her: "never gets easier" is repeated a heap of times, especially at the end. what's with the line "watching you die alone would make you the girl of my dreams"??? Does this mean that he wants her to suffer and not find anyone new as punishment for what she did to him, because he still loves her and is still hurting? Anyway, this is a really sad song, i like it... |

I think its definitely about war, even if it is based on a dream that Nena had. Its really interesting that Goldfinger chose to sing the fourth verse in German, as this verse really does enforce the 'war' interpretation and is very important in the whole 'story' of the song. This is the direct translation by turdy: 99 war-ministers match(stick) and gas-canister thought they were clever people already smelt rich pickings shouted: WAR and wanted power hey, who ever thought of this that this could happen some day because of 99 (air)balloons Has anyone heard the AFI cover of this song? They sing it all in english but the fourth verse has been changed. Also at the end, they end it on "99 dreams i have had, in every one..." and thats it. So its like the war is still going on. I like the goldfinger cover the best though, for sure. |

I agree that there is some relevance to september 11, especially the first verse: "Raise high monolithic statues so fragile as they fall I am ever enthralled Gaze, lie and smirk in time, your arrogance will suit you well 'Til fashion is dispelled" The 'towers' could be the twin towers, and the 'arrogance' could be refering to the Americans thinking they were in control etc. But some things don't fit. I think it's about something broader and more general. I think it's about all the different kinds of people of different religions, etc, in the world who don't understand each other and are threatened by each other. This song is about the possibility that eventually we will end up destroying each other and there will be a huge war. I have to admit though, the 'paper wings' bit did remind me of the suicide bombers, but i don't know whether this was the intention of the line. What does the 'paper' bit mean? |
