| Cat Stevens – Father And Son Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| @Reallyreallyyou It's a bit late to answer you... but you asked about the line "you're still young, that's your fault".. I think he is using the word fault like flaw. So he means "the fact that you're young is your flaw"... Like, if you weren't so young, you would understand what I am trying to tell you.. | |
| Cat Stevens – Banapple Gas Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Sounds to me like he's making a point in general about the questionable things we put into our body -- whether its illegal drugs, sugary cereals, medication, cigarettes.. etc. Everybody's doing it, so me toooooo | |

| Cat Stevens – But I Might Die Tonight Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I agree this song is about a young person who disagrees with what others think is "best" for him (whether that´s his father or society at large). However, unlike Father and Son, this song is completely from the "son´s" perspective. There is one part that I´ve always wondered about though... Anyone have opinions on what this line means? "Cause I know for sure Nobody should be that poor" I have two theories.. 1)Figurative meaning: Noone should be so poor as to spend their entire lives working. 2)Literal meaning: Poverty is wrong, and rather than waste our time on our petty jobs, we should dedicate ourselves to helping people. I am guessing it´s the figurative meaning considering the next to lines, which go back to the main theme of thinking for oneself vs. submitting to societal expectations: "To say yes or sink low Because you happen to say so, say so, you say so " I am interested in other interpretations! |

| Bad Religion – Sorrow Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| PS just because someone doesn't believe in God doesn't mean that they are a total existentialist/absurdist. It just means that, by their reasoning, God probably doesn't exist. Or at least not in the way organized religion says he does. Doesn't mean they don't think there is a deeper meaning to life, or that they don't have their own ideas about the mystical forces in the universe! | |

Funny you bring up BR's "belief system." I have always thought the title of the band could be a nod to the fact the band itself professes certain beliefs and aims to convince others of them. "Bad Religion" in one sense could be labeling religion in general as "bad." But on the other hand it could be labeling the band itself as a type of religion, one that contrasts with other religions as "bad". In this case it's "bad" because it's heretical. So, yes Bad Religion subscribes to a certain beliefs, a "religion" in a sense. But it's a "bad" one because it goes against Christianity and other popular religions. I agree with proman though, that most athiests would not call morality a "farce." In fact, athiests I've talked to believe that people should be accountable for their actions.. a lot of athiests are essentially humanists. They believe that God isn't going to get us out of this mess, that people have to be compassionate and make good descions during their time on Earth. I think that's what this song is about. Humans cause much of their own pain and suffering, and they are the only ones who can do anything to try to put an end to it. We can't blame God for our problems, and we can't expect him to get us out of them.. |

| The Dandy Warhols – You Were The Last High Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| this song seems pretty straight forward. Paraphrase: I could have had any one else but i wanted you. Then I fucked it up somehow. I could still have anyone but I am alone, because I still want you. | |
| The Cure – Friday I'm in Love Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
Whatever the intended meaning is i really doubt that it's about traditional love. Personally, I think it's about hooking up on friday nights. It's easy to "fall in love" on a friday night.. if only for a few minutes ;) I know this sounds obvious.. I'm surprised no one's mentioned it... But couldn't the last stanza be about oral pleasure?? he's "in love"... you bunch of prudes. The drug thing definitely makes sense too, though. It really is incredibly vague. But that's part of what makes it so cool :) |

A lot of people said the meaning of this song is easy to understand. Obviously not. First of all there are tons of people who in my opinion don't get it AT ALL (in other words have interpretations that don't relate to mine), and then there are people like me who get the jist but still don't fully understand. anyway, this is my interpretation: I think it's criticizing the teachings of the bible and putting responsibility on ourselves for "all the sorrow in this world". Suffering is part of the human condition, nothing justifies it. We are the only ones who do anything about it, and shouldn't wait for divine intervention to take the burden off our shoulders. One thing I don't think the song recognizes is that no matter what we do, bad things WILL happen to 'good' people. There will be drought and famon and disease and hurricanes. Job's suffering didn't only come from society, it came from nature, which (in theory) is controlled by God. On the other hand the dealings between God and Satan in the Job story are very human. What kind of God would use that kind of sick human logic? ( Sick logic = this person has been loyal to me so now i'm going to screw him to prove his loyalty). One created by humans I guess. I have no conclusion. |

| Bad Religion – Epiphany Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
PS a key lyric is "Only to discover that our minds have led us away so far from the painful truth of who we are" OUR MINDS led us away, not society, not the media. Epiphany comes out of nothing.. there's no basis for it which is why it's absurd to base our beliefs on it. I think it's important to know what epiphany actually means so here's the definition. A. A revelatory manifestation of a divine being. B 1. A sudden manifestation of the essence or meaning of something. 2. A comprehension or perception of reality by means of a sudden intuitive realization: “I experienced an epiphany, a spiritual flash that would change the way I viewed myself” (Frank Maier). I also suggest looking up manifestation if you don't know what it means. The process of belief is an elixer when you're weak.. I must admit at times I indulge it on the sneak.. (quote from another BR song) wouldn't you guys agree that having an epiphany is awesome regardless of it being essentially meaningless? I mean, it feels awesome. I think I've had a few. In this case I mean a sudden realization that gives you a new perspective on your way of thinking. One of my friends decided he believed in God a few weeks ago because of something that happened to him. While I'm disappointed in my friend, that must be a pretty cool feeling to have. Anyway, I guess this is irrelevant to the meaning of the song hehe. |

I thought about the ending of this song as well and considered some of the same things that wrinkledphole mentioned. But i'm going to have to say I think crazy punk girl is correct. The lyrics go back in forth from the perspective of the narrator and the person he is critisizing. when he says "if it's real for me.. etc" and "it came to me" it is as if it is in quotes from someone else. someone who he is critisizing. I have to say evms made a valiant effort in trying to interpret an anti-capitalist message in this song, but I think it was really a stretch. The song's about the fallacy of epiphany. That's it. Particularly relating to religion and philosphy - a common theme in Bad Religion music. I've never noticed emphasized marxist ideals coming through in BR lyrics before and I've listened to a lot of them. They don't tend to hide their messages so much, they seem to want the listener to understand. I'll have to read up on what the band members political ideologies are. Or does anyone know so I don't have to? :) The (international) noise consipracy who claims BR as one of their top influences is clearly marxist, you might like their stuff. (I do). Though, if that's your thing i'm sure you've listened to them already. |

| The Smiths – Girlfriend in a Coma Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I thought this song was just trying to emphasize the bitersweet realilty of being in a relationship. You can care about someone and not always give them a lot of respect. You can also easily hurt someone you care about even though you might not have meant to, or regret it later. It think the song is pretty vague on purpose. I don't think it's about a person who is actually in a coma. It's just a senerio to provide a feeling. It's showing that every relationship has it's good an bad points and when you're put in a traumatic circumstance like that your brain goes through all these thoughts. You briefly get angry at the person and then start to cry because you remembered something great about them.. this song illustrates an emotional rollercoaster that everyone goes through when something bad happens to someone close to them. | |

| The Smiths – I Know It's Over Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| This song is about a man who has lived a life of hollow relationships. He's with someone for awhile and then they're gone and he's alone again. Love doesn't exist. I draw a parallel to a song off of Morrissey's new album. The lyric "[Jesus] why do you give me so much love, when there's no one i can turn to to unlock all this love?" | |
| Metric – Love Is a Place Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I think this song provides abstract imagery and doesn't really have a concrete meaning. I'm not sure though, there could be some underlying meaning... who is "she"? | |
| Metric – Wet Blanket Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| i think ms. chainsaw is correct. I think the line "it's wrong to want more than a folk song" means 'he' makes 'her' feel like she has nothing to aspire to. She shouldn't want anything better for herself. I think that's a clever line. | |
| Metric – Succexy Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| In the song "succexy" sounds like she's saying "so so sexy"... what do you think this word is supposed to mean? Is it a combination of the words "success" and "sexy"? | |
| Metric – Dead Disco Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I guess this song is about the evolution of music? People think one type of music is "dead" when really it's progressing-- being "remodeled" | |
| Metric – Calculation (Theme) Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| yay Indignity! I thought "I wish we were lovers, but it's for the best" (the line after the farmers part) is really important to the meaning of the song and it was left out on every site that i looked for lyrics on. hmm... Anyway, I think this song is about the complexity of human interaction, and how so much is based on superficial or social things. It could be about two people who are in love (or think they are) but can't' be together because there's something in their way: ie race, religion, social standing etc. This "grid we live in" creates all these rules. Why couldn't we just be farmers? Things would be easier... maybe. The greatest line though, ,that I think sums everything up is "Who put these bodies between us?" | |
