Elliott Smith – A Distorted Reality Is Now a Necessity to Be Free Lyrics | 2 years ago |
This song is about Elliott’s disillusionment with the music industry. His creativity was expanding rapidly in the last few years of his life, but the bigwigs wanted to continue portraying him as a “sad sack” – an image that he has stated in interviews that he doesn’t like. Yes, the drug references are obviously there, but he is using them to paint a picture. His experiences dealing with the major labels, producers, managers and so on are distilled into this seemingly simple song that turns out to be even more powerful when you understand what he is really saying. And for that reason it is one of my favorites. Verse 1: He failed to see the warnings of what he was getting into. Verse 2: He explains to his audience that they only see what the industry wants them to see. He directly references his appearance at the Grammys in an ill-fitting white suit. Bridge: “script” should be “scrip.” Scrip is an outmoded and abusive form of paying an employee’s wages. Scrip could be used at the company store or “scrip store” to buy necessities. Elliott is casting the music business as an abusive employer creating a specific image of him to sell to the public. Chorus: Obvious meaning in context. Verse 3: He is lamenting that he is not truly free as an artist and has to fit into the mold created for him. Second Bridge: He wishes more people would understand the state of the music business and the junk they are being sold. |
