i think jonah does an outstanding job capturing the emotions one has after a break-up (more specifically, when they were the one being dumped). there's so much unbelief and questioning afterwards, and you go over the facts (the reasons why) in your mind over and over, and they never make sense. you've shared so much what that person, you just can't understand what the crap the other person is trying to say when they say how much they love you, and will always love you, yet they can't be with you anymore. you just feel so hurt and crossed, that you start thinking crazy things... revenge, wishing you had been the one to end things so you wouldn't be in pain. and then the aftermath of having to watch your ex dating again and being with other people right before your eyes, making you feel as if what you had with them meant nothing to them..... it's intense... anger and pain, in a nutshell. |

though countless have already commented, i cannot help but comment on such a relatable song.... i think the theme of the song is quite obvious, though this is just my interpretation (for all i could know, chris may have written the song with an entirely different intention.) to me, the song is about youth not wanting to accept who they really are... it's about putting on a metaphorical mask "and that face you paint is pressed impressing most of us as permanent and I'd like to see you undone", and trying to be someone you're not so that people will accept you and think highly of you "here is your moment to shine". when you're insecure with who you are you'll often make up elaborate stories to tell people "making up a history, it's nothing from the life you lead, but man will they buy all your lines" - things you've done, places you seen, people you've met, in an effort to try and create an alternate persona, to become the person you really wish you could be. in general the song is about longing to be grown up, to grow into some other person because you can't stand who you are now "we're not twenty-one, but the sooner we are, the sooner the fun will begin. so get out your fake eyelashes and fake i.d.'s, and real disasters ensue, it's cool to take these chances. it's cool to fake romances and grow up fast." basically that's what i gather from the lyrics... as for the title, i think it's possible that the title isn't really directly related to the song at all. though i'd have to say that if it was i would imagine that possibly the swiss army romance is chris's way of shortly stating the "romance" that youth have for life, but they often get lost along the way, and don't allow themselves to live in the moment, they always desire to be older, powerful, or famous, and because of this eternal dreaming they ruin the good they do have before they even realize it. so in a sense they shred all hope, as if with a knife.... "swiss army romance". it's very possible that with my theory i'm reading way too much into the title, but i don't think we'll know for sure what chris meant until he unfolds his thoughts about it all. |
